Itching pain, also known as pruritus, can be debilitating. The good news is acupuncture reduces itching pain better than most medications.
Is Pruritus Really Pain?
Here’s how Wikipedia defines “pruritus”: Itch (Latin: pruritus) is a sensation that causes the desire or reflex to scratch. Itch has resisted many attempts to classify it as any one type of sensory experience. Modern science has shown that itch has many similarities to pain, and while both are unpleasant sensory experiences, their behavioral response patterns are different. Pain creates a withdrawal reflex, while itch leads to a scratch reflex.
Acupuncture Reduces Itching Pain – But How?
Acupuncture reduces itching pain by treating the root issue beneath the itching. If itching is caused by heat, acupuncture resolves the underlying heat, in turn relieving the pruritus. When caused by a skin condition like eczema or hives, acupuncture resolves the skin condition. Where pruritus is triggered by an allergic reaction, acupuncture relieves the reaction and boosts the patient’s immune system to resist future allergic responses.
So much of modern medicine acts like a band aid, temporarily relieving a symptom. Acupuncture is unique in that it seeks the root cause of a problem and addresses it as a way to resolve symptoms. This is our strategy for pruritus.
What To Expect When You Come For Treatment
When you come to our office suffering from pruritus, we will sit down with you and get a history about the itching. What are your known triggers, how long have you had it, what have you tried in the past to help relieve it. We will then make a Chinese medicine diagnosis as to the root problem behind the itching.
Once we understand, from a Chinese medicine perspective, what it causing your pruritus, we will treat you to resolve that underlying imbalance. And in the process of correcting that issue, your pruritus will be relieved. Unlike topical applications, which last only briefly, acupuncture seeks to bring long lasting relief from your pruritus. Addressing the root problem allows us to achieve that result.

What our Clients are Saying
For the past three years I have suffered from whole body itching. I had every type of test imaginable, but doctors found nothing wrong. They put me on antidepressants, but that did not help. I found raleigh acupuncture on the web. I can not describe exactly what they did, but I can tell you that it helped. My itching is so much better. I am very grateful for their work. I feel it’s saved my life.
When I get stressed my arms start to itch. It gets so bad that I can bleed from the scratching. It’s embarrassing and very painful. My cousin told me about acupuncture and I went to Raleigh Acupuncture. They totally helped my itching problem. I can’t believe it. They said in order to help the itching they also had to make me less stressed. Well, they were right. Now I feel less stressed. But even when I do get stressed, my arms don’t itch. This treatment is fantastic. I told my whole family about it. Now they go there for their problems too. Thank you!!
I developed eczema as a child and have managed the condition for years with steroid creams. Recently my stress level went up from a work situation, and the itching became intolerable. The creams didn’t help and I was desperate. Research online led me to Raleigh Acupuncture. They treated the itching by reducing my eczema. It worked better than the cream ever did. I wish I had done this 15 years ago, as my skin and itching is 90% better.
