How Acupuncture Works
Stress has external and internal triggers. External triggers include work or family conflict, health issues, long commutes, and taxing situations. Internal triggers involve self-pressure, self-judgment, pushing too hard, or burning the candle at both ends. Regardless of the source, stress damages our health, and we need ways to keep it under control.
We need to talk about “Qi” (pronounced Chi) to understand how the Raleigh Acupuncture stress relief treatment works. Qi is energy that flows through our bodies. You can’t see it, touch it or measure it. But you sure can feel it.
Qi is like an electric pulse moving through our bodies, nourishing the organs, circulating the blood, converting food into energy. Qi plays a significant role in Chinese medicine – . all disease involves some form of qi dysfunction, and stress is no exception.
Why Stress Is Bad For Our Health
Stress stagnates the Qi and causes this vital life force to become sluggish, constraining normal circulation. As a result, Qi can’t do its job.
To make matters worse, the stagnation tends to lodge in weak areas of the body, places of past injury. So, for example, someone who had a previous neck injury will have recurring flare-ups when stressed. It’s like seniors who can tell it will rain because their knees ache.
On an emotional level, qi stagnation causes the feeling of stress. Stuck energy in the body triggers feelings of restlessness, frustration, irritation, or lack of motivation. Or you may literally feel stuck, at a loss on how to resolve a frustrating situation. Alternately you can feel lethargic, unwilling to do what’s necessary to move forward. Stress comes in many flavors, none of them good.
Acupuncture Relieves Stress
So how does acupuncture help relieve stress? First, there are specific points on the body that improve qi circulation. In Chinese medicine, the liver’s job is to keep Qi flowing, just like the heart’s job is to circulate blood throughout the body. Acupuncture points like LV3, LI4, LI11, and BL18 boost the liver’s ability to distribute Qi.
When the liver functions strongly, your body can sustain good Qi flow even when stressors arise (lousy day at work, difficult phone call, argument with a friend). In these situations, your body can keep the qi flowing despite its natural inclination to stagnate. The stress may enter your body, but it won’t linger – instead, it will get swept up in the natural flow of Qi and pass out of your body. As a result, stress will not have the opportunity to lodge into an old injury or mess with your emotions.
Stress Rescue Remedy
If you’re already feeling overwhelmed, acupuncture will kick start qi circulation, starting the gentle reduction of emotional stress and physical pain. Once your body has reestablished a healthy qi flow, you will feel less stress, and your immune system will become stronger. So if you want to be that happy person at work who never gets sick, a good place to start is with solid qi circulation.
Stress Reduction Case
A 24-year-old woman came to our clinic feeling stressed out, tired, and overwhelmed. She was finishing her second year of graduate school, facing difficult exams, long papers, and looming deadlines. In addition, she was not sleeping well and had constant stomach pain and headaches.
Her intake exam revealed a pattern diagnosis of Liver Qi stagnation and Spleen Qi deficiency. This is a common pattern in our culture where people work too hard, leading to stress and digestive problems. We selected the following acupoints for her first treatment: GV20, Yintang, LV3, SP6, ST36, LI4, CV6, and ear point Shenmen.
That night she slept like a baby and reported feeling 40 percent better overall. It took just two more treatments for her to recover fully – she finished up the semester and never looked back.

What our Clients are Saying
I was feeling depressed and stressed because I didn’t like my job and didn’t know what to do with my life. I started taking Lexipro but it really affected my libido so I stopped taking it. I tried acupuncture because my husband said it helped him when he was depressed years earlier (before he met me!) I went to Raleigh Acupuncture and started treatments. They were really knowledgeable about Chinese medicine and explained how the body gets stuck in depression, and how the acupuncture gets the body unstuck. They really listened to me and helped me figure stuff out. I started feeling less depressed. Then I actually started getting more clear about what I wanted to do with my life career-wise. I decided to go back to school and now I’m almost done with my degree. I haven’t felt depressed at all since I was treated and I’m really excited about my life. I’m very grateful to them for being such great healers and such a great support to me when I really needed it.
Thank you for your gentle healing spirit. May God bless you as you help others in the healing methods of acupuncture.. My sessions for stress relief were very helpful. In gratitude.
I just started acupuncture and I can really see the benefits. I’ve done massages and all the Western style treatments but this is amazing! It relaxes me in ways I didn’t know could happen and I feel immediate results. I would recommend acupuncture as a treatment. The doctor was great in my initial meeting more thorough than my regular doctor. Highly recommend this!
