We treat a great deal of hip pain at Raleigh Acupuncture. Injuries that fall under this category include sciatica (a.k.a. Piriformis syndrome), Glut spasms, IT band issues, bursitis and low back pain radiating to the hip. Acupuncture works like a charm to relieve all of these pains. Here’s a story about my own hip pain and how acupuncture helped get me back on my feet. After reading it I hope you will begin to see why acupuncture relieves hip pain best.
The Acupuncturist Gets Acupuncture!
Last year I pulled my left hip muscle at the gym. It was the gluteus medius, to be exact. And it hurt a lot! I had just gotten over a shoulder injury and was still overcompensating my movements. That may have been the cause. Or it may have been just plain bad luck. It doesn’t take much to aggravate a hip muscle, or the low back for that matter. Sometimes you can sneeze the wrong way and pull a muscle. I know…because I have!
Hip pain was nothing new to me. I’ve been dealing with it off and on since I was 15 years old. However, for the last 20 years acupuncture had dramatically reduced it’s frequency. Before acupuncture my hip muscles would go into spasm once every two or three months. Eight days ago was the first incident in over 2 years. I immediately stopped exercising, even though I was only halfway done at the gym. I limped putting the weights away, and by the time I showered, I was hunched over in that classic hip spasm posture. I looked a bit like the hunchback of Notre Dame.
Lucky for me, I have easy access to one of the best acupuncturists in Raleigh, my wife and acupuncture partner, Jinmei Xu. The same day of my injury I got acupuncture. Jinmei released the spasm by needling the motor point, and the healing process had started. After this first treatment my pain level dropped 50%. Over the course of the next week I received another three acupuncture treatments. With each one my hip felt better.
After seven days, I was stiff, but my pain was 95% resolved. I was back in the gym three days later, starting with light weights and getting my mobility back. Without acupuncture, that pain would have lasted a month minimum, and possibly longer. I did not miss a single day of work. Even on the day of my injury I was able to treat patients. I moved slower, but was able to perform my job.
Acupuncture Relieves Hip Pain Best
Acupuncture excels at treating hip pain for the following reason. We treat the injury with multiple therapies all at the same time. We release the spasm at the site of the injury. This eases the pain level and allows the muscle to heal faster. With each spasm release, the muscle eases. It is an unwinding process, and the sooner you start, the faster you get better. When patients call with an acute hip injury, we do our best to get them into the office the same day, even when our schedule is full. Time is of the essence.
In addition to releasing the spasm, we nourish and strengthen the hip region, which gets severely weakened by the injury. In my case, the key to reducing the number of recurring hip injuries was due to strengthening my low back and hip with acupuncture. This is an organ-strengthening technique. The kidneys, in Chinese medicine, nourish and strengthen the low back and hips. Just releasing the muscle spasm without strengthening the hips is treating the symptom without addressing the root problem. You need both therapies for complete healing. This is an important reason why acupuncture relieves hip pain best.

What our Clients are Saying
I’m a semi-professional weight lifter. I never had a problem until my hip went out doing squats. The pain was tremendous, like a sharp nerve pain down the back of my leg into the calf. It had sidelined me for two months while I tried unsuccessfully to work out the pain. Then a buddy suggested acupuncture. He had a similar hip pain and got relief at Raleigh Acupuncture. I went there and got treated. They told me to stop stretching until the injury was healed. I followed their instructions and got half a dozen treatments. The pain started easing after the first few treatments. I continued for another 6 treatments and was totally cured. I was able to get back to lifting with no residual effects of the injury. I’ve recommended this practice to a number of friends since that time and they all have had good experiences.
Ever since my hip replacement I had terrible hip pain that radiated down my leg into my foot. They were talking about redoing the hip, which I didn’t want to do, so I tried acupuncture. The doctors at Raleigh Acupuncture were wonderful. They gave me lots of time and told me what they were doing. They got rid of 90% of my pain. I can live with that!
I’ve been suffering from sciatic pain for years, since I was in a car accident. I tried everything and nothing helped. I couldn’t walk right and had a bad limp. My son made me go to Raleigh Acupuncture (I am afraid of needles!). They told me they would treat me 4 times to see how I responded. Well, I responded great. I had to get 6 treatments to get rid of the pain. Now I walk fine (no limp) and feel all better. Great place!
