Do you have ringing in the ear? Does it sound like a bell, chirping crickets, or the ocean? Is the sound there all the time, or does it come and go? Maybe it is apparent just when you are lying in bed, when the world quiets down. Is there accompanying hearing loss? If you’ve been to the doctor you know there is no good tinnitus treatment available from Western medicine. But wait… There is a good tinnitus treatment available from Chinese medicine. In many cases acupuncture relieves tinnitus.
Tinnitus Treatment With Acupuncture
You need to know up front that the tinnitus treatment with acupuncture works for certain types of tinnitus but not for others. Let’s start with the type of tinnitus where acupuncture does not work. It does not work well for patients in their 70’s and 80’s who suffer from progressive hearing loss. The tinnitus that comes from progressive hearing loss does not respond well to acupuncture.
However, acupuncture relieves tinnitus in many other situations. For example, tinnitus will often strike people in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s after an illness. Or tinnitus will develop when folks are under high stress or have been through a traumatic event. Tinnitus treatment with acupuncture will work for people who have a strong temper and get upset easily. They present with red face, and typically run on the hot side (both temperature-wise and emotionally).
Basically, if you have developed tinnitus and are not also dealing with age-related hearing loss or structural damage to the ear, then the tinnitus treatment with acupuncture may be able to help. If your tinnitus is so loud that it impairs your hearing, the tinnitus treatment can still help. In this case the hearing loss may not be due to age-related ear function, but rather to tinnitus simply blocking out other sounds. These types of tinnitus can respond to our tinnitus treatment.
How Does Acupuncture Treat Tinnitus?
The tinnitus treatment with acupuncture will vary from patient to patient, depending on how they present. However, here are some basic rules for how acupuncture works in a tinnitus treatment.
First, illness and trauma can often create imbalances in a person’s body that generate what we call “Yang energy” to rise to the head. When this Yang energy floods the head, it can cause tinnitus. Acupuncture relieves tinnitus by anchoring the Yang energy, allowing it to descend from the head back into the body.
Secondly, people with quick tempers also have a tendency toward Yang Rising, the rising of Yang energy to the head. In these cases we balance the body, remove the excess Yang energy and also anchor the Yang energy so it does not rise.
Thirdly, people with what we call “Yin Deficiency” also have a tendency to develop Yang Rising and it’s related tinnitus symptoms. In these cases we focus on nourishing the Yin to resolve the deficiency. Acupuncture relieves tinnitus because the Yin serves to anchor the Yang.
Fourth, phlegm dampness can cause tinnitus. Think “sinus infection” in the ear. For this presentation, acupuncture relieves tinnitus by reducing dampness, transforming phlegm, and opening the orifices (the ears).
With all of these situations, once balance is restored, tinnitus is eased. Acupuncture relieves tinnitus by addressing the root problem. Once the root is corrected, tinnitus diminishes.

What our Clients are Saying
I’ve had tinnitus for as long as I can remember. It came and went, sounding like the ocean. I would hear it mostly at night, which made it difficult to fall asleep. I was getting my back treated at Raleigh Acupuncture when I happened to mention the tinnitus. The doctor offered to treat that at the same time, and to my surprise, the tinnitus went away. What a bonus to my back treatment (which by the way also got better!). I would have taken care of this years ago if I knew acupuncture could cure tinnitus.
I developed ringing in my ears last year out of the blue. My doctor put me on medications, but it didn’t help. Research on the web led me to Raleigh Acupuncture. They treated me a dozen times and my ringing was gone. It has not come back. I don’t know what they did, but it worked. I’m very grateful. Thank you.
