Sciatica is a nasty pain. It can be throbbing, achy, stabbing or searing. The pain often starts in the low back or hip and travels down the leg, through the calf, and into the foot. It is commonly a nerve pain, sharp and achy, that interferes with sleep, work and quality of life. And once it strikes, it is very slow to heal, sometimes taking many months or even years to get better. But the good news is that acupuncture resolves sciatica best!
What Triggers Sciatica?
In my own case, I was lifting weights (leg presses) when I heard a pop. The result was terrible pain in my hip that traveled down my left leg to the foot. Our patients describe sciatic pain coming on from lifting a heavy piece of furniture, playing basketball as a weekend warrior, or skiing too aggressively down a mogul field.
The exact injury varies, but the mechanism of pain is similar. This injury causes pressure on the sciatic nerve. First, it can be a muscle in spasm. Second, it can be a bulging disc. Third, it can be an injured tendon or ligament. The impinged nerve causes shooting pain. And of course the injury itself (muscle, disc, etc) has it’s own pain.

Helpful Piriformis Syndrome Tips
Here are some useful tips if you are currently suffering from sciatica or piriformis syndrome. First, don’t try to “stretch it out”. While stretching is helpful for general tightness, it’s bad with an injury like this. Second, you can’t “push through” this injury. You need to rest. Make an appointment as soon as possible. The sooner you start treatment, the quicker you will get better. Third, sciatica is a difficult injury, but with the right approach and care you’ll be up and running again in no time.
Acupuncture Resolves Sciatica Best
Sciatica is also referred to as piriformis syndrome. That’s because the piriformis muscles, located in the hip, presses on the sciatic nerve when it’s in spasm. Acupuncture resolves sciatica best by releasing the spasm in the piriformis muscle. Treatment brings long lasting healing. Pain medicines are a temporary solution. Acupuncture resolves the root problem, healing from within.

What our Clients are Saying
I’m a semi-professional weight lifter. I never had a problem until my hip went out doing squats. The pain was tremendous, like a sharp nerve pain down the back of my leg into the calf. It had sidelined me for two months while I tried unsuccessfully to work out the pain. Then a buddy suggested acupuncture. He had a similar hip pain and got relief at Raleigh Acupuncture. I went there and got treated. They told me to stop stretching until the injury was healed. I followed their instructions and got half a dozen treatments. The pain started easing after the first few treatments. I continued for another 6 treatments and was totally cured. I was able to get back to lifting with no residual effects of the injury. I’ve recommended this practice to a number of friends since that time and they all have had good experiences.
Ever since my hip replacement I had terrible hip pain that radiated down my leg into my foot. They were talking about redoing the hip, which I didn’t want to do, so I tried acupuncture. The doctors at Raleigh Acupuncture were wonderful. They gave me lots of time and told me what they were doing. They got rid of 90% of my pain. I can live with that!
I’ve been suffering from sciatic pain for years, since I was in a car accident. I tried everything and nothing helped. I couldn’t walk right and had a bad limp. My son made me go to Raleigh Acupuncture (I am afraid of needles!). They told me they would treat me 4 times to see how I responded. Well, I responded great. I had to get 6 treatments to get rid of the pain. Now I walk fine (no limp) and feel all better. Great place!
