A 45 year old female nurse came to our clinic wanting treatment for ADHD. She struggled with concentration problems, lack of focus, scattered thinking and difficulty staying on task. She had been dealing with ADHD for a long time. It made work difficult, and affected her home life as well. This ADHD case study discusses how acupuncture helped her situation.
ADHD Case Study
WebMD defines ADHD as “a chronic condition marked by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and sometimes impulsivity. ADHD begins in childhood and often lasts into adulthood. As many as 2 out of every 3 children with ADHD continue to have symptoms as adults.”
Most people with ADHD are intelligent, sensitive and high functioning. Their condition is challenging and stressful. Our patient was an excellent nurse, was highly intelligent, and had a great deal of responsibility at work. But her ADHD was taxing her.
In addition to ADHD she had a history of depression. We treated both conditions. Her Chinese medicine pattern diagnosis was Liver Qi Stagnation and Spleen Qi deficiency. Liver qi stagnation indicates that qi (energy) was not flowing smoothly through her body and organs, including her brain. Spleen deficiency indicated that food was not being transformed into energy efficiently, and her body was generating dampness and phlegm.
By identifying her pattern imbalances we were able to use acupuncture to correct them. Using the following acupuncture points we “smoothed” her Liver Qi and “strengthened” her Spleep Qi: LV3, ST36, Li4, CV12, BL15, BL18, BL20 and BL23. We alternated face up and face down treatments, as there are excellent points on both the front and back of the body.
Results
After 4 treatments our patient was feeling a distinct improvement in her ADHD symptoms. Her focus was better, concentration more acute, and she felt less jittery overall. After 3 more treatments she was feeling 80% better. She decided to come in once a month for maintenance, and has been doing so ever since. Her ADHD no longer disrupts her life. It is something she can manage.
What To Expect
All of our treatments, including this ADHD case study, use sterile, single-use, hair thin needles. Points on the surface of the body stimulate changes to organ and brain function. The needles don’t hurt. In fact, treatments are relaxing. Patients often fall asleep during their sessions.
