Prevention Magazine’s May 2015 issue featured an article about the great benefits of acupuncture for better health. Here’s what they said. “Your Body on Acupuncture – It’s not news that this ancient technique can do cool stuff for your health – but which claims are actually backed by science? Here, six real-deal reasons to get needled.” In today’s blog post I’ll quote their article, then add my comments. Hope you enjoy it!
Better Health – Prevention Magazine’s Six Reasons For Acupuncture
Reason One – Deep, Deep Sleep
“By revving neurotransmitters linked to snoozing, acupuncture can mean less time tossing and turning.” Any of our patients will tell you that acupuncture helps improve sleep quality. Whether you’re coming in for insomnia or neck pain, the treatments will help you sleep better. That’s because even when we treat for pain conditions, we always include points to encourage good sleep. Healing occurs at night when we sleep. Better health also requires good sleep. So good sleep is a prerequisite for all types of healing, and we promote it with every acupuncture treatment we do.
Reason Two – Cheerier Outlook
“Weekly sessions can ease depression within 3 months – similar to the effectiveness of counseling.” In our experience, this is true. In fact, many of our patients either can’t afford counselling or don’t like it. Acupuncture gets similar results for a third the cost of counselling. We also find that many of our patients can reduce or even stop taking anti-depressant medication after receiving acupuncture. (As with all decisions regarding medications, the patient must always consult with their Western medical doctor before making changes to their medications.)
Reason Three – Simpler Slim-Downs
“Obese adults shed up to 9 pounds after getting needled for 2 weeks or more. (It helps regulate hunger.)” We’ve had patients lose 60 pounds while receiving acupuncture from us for weight loss. It’s more than just regulating hunger. It completely revitalizes your metabolism too, so the food you eat turns into energy instead of fat. There is no better way to lose weight and attain better health than with acupuncture.
Reason Four – Milder Menopause
“Acupuncture eases the frequency and severity of hot flashes for up to 3 months after an average of 2 months of treatment.” Most of our patients who come for treatment for menopausal symptoms get permanent relief. Some need to come in for maintenance every 3 months. The reason we get long lasting results is that the acupuncture helps a woman’s body adjust to the new hormone levels. Once the body has adjusted, it no longer generates the symptoms like hot flashes, irritability and sleep problems. CLICK HERE to watch a video on how we treat hot flashes.
Reason Five – A Calmer Heart
“Regular sessions can decrease markers of stress and reduce blood pressure.” Any one of our patients will tell you that they feel less stress after acupuncture, and that the feeling lasts all week long following their treatment. For those who have high blood pressure, their blood pressure lowers when they receive acupuncture. Acupuncture improves the flow of Qi through the body. When the Qi flows, you feel less stress and the blood circulates better, lowering blood pressure if it was previously high.
Reason Six – Fewer Aches
“Half of one study’s subjects found lower back pain relief for 6 months after 5 weeks of twice-weekly sessions.” Add to that neck pain relief, shoulder pain relief, knee pain relief and elbow pain relief. Acupuncture not only brings better health, it brings pain relief for the whole body. Why? Because when the Qi flows better, not only is there less stress, there is less pain. A muscle in spasm has poor Qi circulation. Therefore it has poor blood circulation. The result is pain. Move the Qi, then the blood will circulate and pain will ease.
