Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) formerly known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), is an amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome. It is a chronic disease with symptoms of severe pain, swelling, and changes in the skin.
Complex regional pain syndrome often gets worse over time. It may initially affect an arm or leg and then spread throughout the body. Thirty-five percent of people have symptoms throughout their whole body. Other potential symptoms include problems with the autonomic nervous system, nerve pain, edema, musculoskeletal pain, endocrine problems, or skin issues. There are sometimes problems with urination and digestion.
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: How Can Acupuncture Help?
The World Health Organization recognizes the role acupuncture can play in minimizing the symptoms associated with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Specifically, the pain associated with this condition can be “calmed down” dramatically with acupuncture. This is because acupuncture increases the body’s ability to regain balance.
Chronic conditions like complex regional pain syndrome throw the body out of balance, disrupting proper blood circulation, Qi flow and organ function. This imbalance causes a host of symptoms including pain, swelling, skin irritation and hormone imbalances. Acupuncture resets the body, helping it heal by returning it to a natural, balanced state.
The Details
Each patient with complex regional pain syndrome will be treated based on their particular symptoms. Imbalances causes by this condition vary widely from patient to patient, and acupuncture always focuses on custom treatments designed specifically for the patient.
We had a patient presenting with severe nerve pain that traveled the whole length of her leg. In this case, the treatment focused on improving Qi and blood circulation, and reducing the level of nerve pain in her leg. Another patient with complex regional pain syndrome had severe skin irritation on his arms and legs. We treated him to reduce inflammation and also at the specific sites on the skin that were agitated.
