In this longevity case review, Evelyn, an 80-year-old woman, visited our clinic seeking to improve her quality of life, manage her chronic conditions, and enhance her longevity. She was relatively healthy but had been dealing with age-related issues, including mild cognitive decline, chronic knee pain, poor sleep, and low energy levels. Her primary goal was to feel more energized and capable of maintaining an active lifestyle so that she could continue enjoying activities with her grandchildren and friends.
Initial Assessment
During her initial consultation, Evelyn described her main challenges:
Knee Pain and Limited Mobility
Evelyn experienced moderate knee pain due to osteoarthritis, which limited her ability to walk long distances and impacted her physical activity level.
Cognitive Fog and Memory Concerns
She noticed mild forgetfulness and occasional difficulty concentrating, which worried her and led to some anxiety about cognitive decline.
Poor Sleep Quality
Evelyn reported frequent awakenings during the night and trouble falling asleep. Her insomnia affected her energy levels and left her feeling drained.
Low Energy and Fatigue
Persistent fatigue had become an obstacle to maintaining her desired lifestyle.
Chinese Medicine Diagnosis
Evelyn’s Chinese medicine diagnosis included Kidney Qi and Yin Deficiency, along with mild Spleen Qi Deficiency, patterns often associated with aging. Her tongue was pale with a thin white coating, and her pulse was weak, particularly at the Kidney and Spleen positions.
Longevity Treatment Plan
Our primary objectives were to:
- Reduce knee pain and increase her mobility.
- Support cognitive health and alleviate her anxiety.
- Improve sleep quality and overall energy levels.
We recommended eight weekly acupuncture sessions, followed by maintenance treatments once a month. Each session included acupuncture to stimulate specific points related to her presenting symptoms and underlying pattern imbalances. Her treatment plan involved:
For Knee Pain and Mobility: We selected acupoints ST35, ST36, SP9, and GB34 to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation to the knee joint.
For Cognitive Support and Emotional Well-being: We chose GV20 (Baihui) and Yintang to increase mental clarity, reduce stress, and support brain function.
For Sleep and Energy: We utilized acupoints HT7 (Shenmen) and Anmian (for insomnia) to improve sleep quality, and ST36 and SP6 to help boost energy and address fatigue.
Kidney and Spleen Qi Strengthening: We added KI3, KI6, SP6, and CV4 to nourish Kidney Qi and Yin, which supported vitality and resilience in Evelyn’s aging body.
Acupuncture Treatment Results
Evelyn experienced progressive improvements as her sessions progressed:
Mobility and Knee Pain Relief: Evelyn reported a significant reduction in knee pain following the second treatment. Her mobility slowly improved with each session, allowing her to take longer walks with less discomfort. After the eighth session, she felt confident enough to join her friends in a weekly walking group.
Cognitive Clarity and Emotional Well-being: Within a few weeks, Evelyn began noticing improvements in her focus and memory. She expressed feeling “more present” and less anxious about forgetting things. The point combinations for calming and mental clarity, such as GV20 and Yintang, seemed to help ease her mind and support sharper cognitive function.
Improved Sleep: Evelyn’s sleep patterns improved noticeably. She reported falling asleep faster and waking up less frequently at night. Her energy levels also improved as her sleep became more restorative. She noted, “I feel more like myself in the mornings, ready to get going without feeling sluggish.”
Increased Energy and Vitality: As her treatment progressed, Evelyn felt a steady increase in her energy levels. By the eighth session, she resumed attending social gatherings and felt more engaged in activities with her grandchildren. Her family noticed she was “brighter” and more energetic overall.
Follow-Up and Maintenance
After her initial series of treatments, Evelyn decided to continue acupuncture once a month for maintenance. Her energy, mobility, and mental clarity remained stable, and she was highly motivated to stay proactive in supporting her health.
