Acupuncture for concussion treatment, insomnia, dizziness, headaches, and post traumatic stress syndrome is getting increased use in the US military. In a recent issue of Stars and Stripes, Dr. Joseph Stuessi notes, “I’ve found phenomenal, off-the-charts results doing acupuncture for sleep, dizziness and headaches.” It’s part of a growing trend where the military treats concussion with acupuncture.
First Identified in 1967
The US military has documented the usefulness of acupuncture since 1967 when an Army surgeon wrote an article on the benefits of acupuncture in Military Medicine magazine. Since that time, doctors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. now recommend acupuncture for the treatment of physical pain due to injuries.
The Air Force runs a full time acupuncture clinic at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Col. Richard Niemtzow, an Air Force physician, first offered acupuncture in 1995 at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. Later, he founded the acupuncture clinic at Andrews in Maryland.
In addition to clinical care for patients, they also bring acupuncture therapy to war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan. The focus in these combat situations is on the treatment of pain and post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD).
In addition, the Navy is starting to provide acupuncture to sailors at Camp Pendleton in California. Dr. (Maj.) Ronald White, director of pain services at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, supports the use of acupuncture in the US military, stating “There’s no risk; it gives you benefit. Our goal — my end result — is function. If you come to me complaining that you can’t play with your kids, you can’t sleep at night, you can’t work, and six months later, I have you playing, sleeping and back to work, that’s improved function.”

What our Clients are Saying
Weekend warrior playing basketball, ended up with two concussions in two months. Not pretty. High stress job was not helping. Turned to acupuncture and got relief. Helped with mental focus, reduced my stress levels, and helped me get back on a normal sleep cycle. I’m not 100% yet, but feel I have a good chance of getting there. Will continue treatment. Am grateful to the folks at Raleigh Acupuncture. They really care about me getting better. I don’t wish this on anyone, but if you’re dealing with it, check them out. They’ll probably be able to help you.
Raleigh Acupuncture really helped me after my concussion. I was getting bad headaches every afternoon, could not concentrate, had blurred vision and terrible anxiety. The treatments were great. Relaxed me completely. Now I don’t get daily headaches, my thinking is a lot more clear, and I’m a whole lot less anxious. Thank you for your help!
