Night Sweats and Stress Resolved Best With Acupuncture

February 4, 2017 By Jinmei Joy MAX Xu

Night sweats are annoying. Not only do they wake you up at night, but when you wake up you’re all damp. Women going through menopause often experience night sweats. We treat night sweats all the time in our acupuncture practice. Acupuncture helps women adjust to the new hormone levels brought on by menopause, and when it does, the night sweats cease.

Night Sweats and Stress

An interesting observation I’ve made over the years in treating women for night sweats is that stress dramatically makes the night sweats worse. For example, a woman will come in and want acupuncture for night sweats. After six treatments she is 80% better.

Then a stressor will come in to her life. It could be that work becomes much more difficult, or there is a family crisis. The stress triggers the night sweats to come back with a vengeance.

Stress Makes Everything Worse

When this happens, we make some adjustments to the acupuncture treatment. We continue with the night sweat treatment (which is actually a hormone balancing treatment). However, in addition, we start treating the stress. We treat stress by moving the Qi in the body. Stress makes the Qi stagnate. Qi stagnation makes all health conditions worse.

Acupuncture To The Rescue

Moving the Qi, which reduces the stress, allows us to continue resolving the night sweats. We also often counsel our patients on how to best deal with the new stressor in their lives. If it is job related, is it temporary? If so, they can probably wait it out. If it’s a permanent stressor, they may have to think about getting themselves out of the situation.

Is the family stress something that can be resolved? Or do they need outside help to deal with this new stress in their lives? All of these issues are relevant to their treatment.

Make Needed Changes

Incidentally, one of the great benefits of acupuncture is that it helps the patient make difficult changes in their life. When people feel stuck, acupuncture helps them see possibilities again.

Moving the Qi is absolutely amazing at this. In the case of a patient facing a toxic work environment, acupuncture can help give them the clarity and courage to make a change and find a better job.

Treatments Custom Made For You

The healing process is very dynamic. As acupuncturists we must be ready to address multiple issues in resolving any given health condition. This example of night sweats could equally apply to any number of other health conditions we treat.

Long Term Solution For Health

This helps explain how our health slowly deteriorates as we get older if we don’t address the issues as they come up. One condition builds on another, and stress makes everything worse. If you have night sweats or any other imbalance causing you trouble, don’t wait. Get some help. Try acupuncture and watch how it makes you feel better.
