I was recently treating a woman for foot pain and she mentioned that she wasn’t sleeping well. It ends up that over the past six months she starting waking up at 1:45 am feeling hot and agitated. She was 47 years old and still getting her period. Today’s blog post explores perimenopause symptoms reduced using acupuncture.
I said to her, “Sounds like you’re starting to feel the effects of perimenopause.” She asked, “Already?!” I explained that most women go through menopause between the ages of 47 and 53. And that two of the most common symptoms were feeling hot (often to the point of having night sweats and hot flashes) and waking during the night. I told her acupuncture could resolve these sleep and heat symptoms safely and naturally. She was game to try. Two months later her symptoms were resolved. She was sleeping through the night and the night sweats had stopped.
What Is Perimenopause?
Here’s how Wikipedia defines it: “The term “perimenopause”, which literally means “around the menopause”, refers to the menopause transition years, a span of time both before and after the date of the final episode of flow.
During perimenopause, estrogen levels average about 20-30% higher than during menopause, often with wide fluctuations. These fluctuations cause many of the physical changes during perimenopause as well as menopause. Some of these changes are hot flashes, night sweats, difficulty sleeping, vaginal dryness or atrophy, incontinence, osteoporosis, and heart disease.”
The hormone level changes are responsible for the unpleasant symptoms associates with perimenopause. This was the case with my patient. Her body had started this change six months earlier. I offered her a solution to the problem. But how did it work?
How Does Acupuncture Resolve Perimenopause Symptoms?
Chinese medicine, which includes acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, is based on the principal of balance. Disease and health problems are triggered by imbalances in the body. Health is restored by bringing the body back into balance.
In the case of perimenopause, changing hormone levels are responsible for the symptoms associated with the condition. Acupuncture works by helping the body adjust to these new hormone levels. We do not force the body to create the old levels of hormone from before. That’s what hormone replacement therapy does. Instead, we seek a more natural, holistic solution.
Acupuncture says, Hey, your body is finding a new hormone level that suits your needs now that you don’t need to make babies any more. But your body is not used to these levels. So it’s reacting, or over reacting, to compensate. Acupuncture helps your body make the transition and accept the new hormone levels. And the result is that your unpleasant symptoms will disappear.
What To Expect
And that’s just what happens during the acupuncture course of treatment for perimenopause. Your body adjusts and your symptoms disappear. Left untreated, most women’s bodies make this adjustment themselves. But it typically takes 3 to 5 years. Acupuncture speeds up the adjustment process, taking on average just 3 months. And the results are long lasting. Once your body adjusts to the new hormone levels, it stays adjusted. See below for more information about perimenopause symptoms reduced using acupuncture.
