Prostatitis Case Report

Prostatitis Case Report

This prostatitis case report presents the therapeutic effects of acupuncture as a complementary treatment for a 45-year-old man diagnosed with chronic prostatitis. Following eight acupuncture sessions, our patient experienced significant improvements in pain levels, urinary symptoms, and inflammation markers. This case highlights the potential of acupuncture as an effective adjunctive therapy in prostatitis management.

Prostatitis Patient Information

  • Age: 45 years
  • Occupation: Mortgage Broker
  • Medical History: Our patient had a 2-year history of chronic prostatitis, characterized by recurrent episodes of pelvic pain, urinary urgency, and discomfort during urination. Previous treatments included antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy, which provided limited relief.

Case Report Assessment

At the initial assessment, our patient in this prostatitis case report had a pain level of 8 on a visual analog scale (VAS) of 0 to 10, with 10 being the most severe pain. In addition, he described urinary symptoms, including increased frequency and urgency, affecting his daily activities and quality of life. Furthermore, blood tests indicated elevated levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and C-reactive protein (CRP), suggesting ongoing inflammation.

Prostatitis Treatment Plan

Our patient consented to a course of acupuncture treatment as a complementary therapy alongside his ongoing conventional treatments. Specifically, the acupuncture protocol involved inserting sterile, single-use needles at specific acupoints chosen based on traditional Chinese medicine theory and modern acupuncture research.

We treated him once a week for eight weeks. Each treatment included acupoints from the following pool of acupuncture points:
CV4, CV2, ST28, ST30, LV3, LV5, SP6, LI11, GV14, GV4, GV2, BL18, BL23, BL32, GV20, Si shen cong

Case Outcome

After the eight-week treatment period, the patient reported significant improvements:

Pain Reduction

  • Initial VAS pain score: 8
  • Post-treatment VAS pain score: 3

Urinary Symptoms

  • Reduced frequency and urgency

Inflammation Markers

  • PSA levels decreased from 9.5 ng/mL to 5.2 ng/mL
  • CRP levels decreased from 12.4 mg/L to 6.8 mg/L

Case Report Discussion

The observed improvements in pain levels, urinary symptoms, and inflammation markers in this prostatitis case report suggest that acupuncture played a crucial role in managing the patient’s chronic prostatitis. In addition, the reduction in PSA and CRP levels indicates a potential anti-inflammatory effect of acupuncture on the prostate gland.

Mechanisms of Action

From a Chinese medicine perspective, the mechanisms of action included clearing damp heat from the patient’s lower jiao (low abdomen). Furthermore, we strengthened his kidney function and increased Qi and blood circulation in the perineal area. Practitioners have followed these standards of treatment for treating prostatitis for centuries.

Looking at our treatment from a Western medical perspective, possible mechanisms of action include the following:

  • Regulation of Inflammation: Acupuncture modulates the immune response, reducing inflammation in the prostate gland.
  • Pelvic Muscle Relaxation: By targeting specific acupoints, acupuncture alleviates pelvic floor muscle tension, a common contributor to prostatitis symptoms.
  • Improved Blood Flow: Enhanced circulation facilitated by acupuncture aids in delivering essential nutrients and oxygen to the affected prostate tissue.
  • Nervous System Modulation: Acupuncture’s influence on the autonomic nervous system contributes to pain relief and reduced inflammation.

Case Report Conclusion

This prostatitis case report highlights the promising therapeutic effects of acupuncture in the management of chronic prostatitis. While further research and larger-scale clinical trials are warranted, these findings suggest that acupuncture can be a valuable adjunctive therapy for prostatitis patients. Furthermore, healthcare providers should include acupuncture as part of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to prostatitis treatment.
