BPPV stands for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, commonly known as vertigo, more commonly known as a really bad case of dizziness. I mentioned that vertigo is caused by phlegm in your head. That sounds like a bad cold, not vertigo. Actually there are two different types of phlegm in the body, substantial and insubstantial. Substantial phlegm is the the kind we all know, the stuff in our nose we get with a cold. But the body produces another form of phlegm, insubstantial or energetic phlegm, that can block orifices like the ears, and even the mind. Vertigo comes from phlegm blocking the ears. So, by resolving the insubstantial phlegm the vertigo will go away.
Another cause of vertigo is something we refer to in Chinese medicine as internal wind. You know about external wind, the stuff that blows outside. The ancient Chinese described internal wind as being responsible for dizziness. It is the root of other conditions as well, but for our purposes today know that vertigo often has a component of internal wind in the head. Acupuncture can disperse internal wind very effectively.
What To Expect
When you come for acupuncture suffering from vertigo, we will determine what’s causing your situation. It could be insubstantial phlegm, it could be internal wind, or it might be something else. Often it’s a combination of factors. We will then create a treatment plan of acupuncture points to correct the imbalances at the root of the problem.
The treatments themselves are very relaxing. And don’t worry about the needles. We only use sterile, single-use, hair thin needles. You will hardly feel them. And for extra sensitive patients we have special, extra tiny needles that you’ll be hard pressed to see (think extra hair thin).
Afterward your acupuncture session you will feel refreshed and rejuvenated. We will probably send you home with some Chinese herbs to keep working on the treatment at home until your next visit. And within four to seven treatments your vertigo will be completely resolved.
