Introduction
Mrs. Smith (not her real name), a 36-year-old woman, sought acupuncture treatment for her struggles with sugar cravings, weight gain, and a recent diagnosis of prediabetes. She was an event planner, a profession known for its inherent stress and extensive travel commitments. Managing logistics, coordinating details, and overseeing events required her constant attention and energy, making her job both mentally and physically taxing. The frequent need to eat out during events exacerbated her challenges, as the available food options often lacked the nutritional balance necessary for sustaining her well-being. The combination of a high-stress job, irregular eating patterns, and the temptation of unhealthy food choices contributed to her current health struggles. Seeking a holistic solution, Mrs. Smith turned to acupuncture. She hoped to find relief and balance in her hectic professional life. This sugar cravings case report describes the acupuncture intervention that helped turn her health around.
Understanding Sugar Cravings
In the context of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), sugar cravings are often associated with spleen qi deficiency, a condition indicating weakness in the digestive system. According to TCM principles, the spleen is responsible for transforming and transporting nutrients obtained from food. When the spleen qi is deficient, the digestive system becomes weakened, leading to poor metabolism and inefficient extraction of nutrients. This deficiency may result in an inadequate supply of energy, prompting the body to crave quick sources of energy, such as sugar. To address sugar cravings in TCM, the focus is on strengthening the spleen qi through dietary adjustments, herbal remedies, and lifestyle changes. Promoting a diet that supports the spleen and incorporating nourishing foods can enhance digestive capacity. Engaging in practices like acupuncture can help alleviate spleen qi deficiency and reduce cravings for sugary foods.
Intake Examination
Mrs. Smith’s intake exam in this sugar cravings case report revealed that she had chronic bloating, loose stools, excess gas, fatigue, muscle soreness, difficulty falling asleep, the tendency to overthink and worry, and severe PMS before her periods. Her tongue was pale, with scalloped edges, and a white tongue coating. This presentation indicated significant digestive disharmony and blood deficiency. Her pulse was thin and wiry, telling us that her body was holding a significant amount of stress while being both qi and blood deficient.
Chinese Medicine Diagnosis
Upon initial assessment, Mrs. Smith’s symptoms aligned with a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) pattern imbalance of Liver Qi Stagnation, Kidney Yang deficiency, and Spleen Qi deficiency. Based on TCM principles, these imbalances all can contribute to sugar cravings, weight gain, and metabolic dysfunction.

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Sugar Cravings
Chinese herbal medicine employs a holistic approach to strengthen Spleen Qi and address metabolic imbalances, helping to mitigate sugar cravings, manage weight, and potentially improve prediabetes. Herbs such as Dang Shen, Chen Pi, and Gan Cao are commonly used in Chinese herbal formulations to tonify the Spleen Qi and enhance digestive functions. These herbs aim to fortify the body’s vital energy, improve nutrient absorption, and regulate blood sugar levels. By promoting a balanced energy flow, Chinese herbal medicine can assist in reducing sugar cravings and supporting weight management. Incorporating these herbal remedies into a comprehensive treatment plan, including dietary modifications and lifestyle adjustments, can contribute to a more holistic approach. This addresses both the symptoms and underlying imbalances linked to prediabetes and weight concerns within the framework of traditional Chinese medicine.
In this sugar cravings case report, we prescribed a variation of the classic Chinese medicine herbal formula called Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang to support her healing process.
Sugar Cravings Treatment Plan
The treatment plan consisted of 10 acupuncture sessions, scheduled once a week. Each session involved a combination of acupuncture, Chinese medicinal herbs, and dietary counseling based on TCM principles. She took the herbal formula three times a day before meals. Mrs. Smith was encouraged to incorporate warming foods, avoid excessive cold and raw foods, and practice mindfulness during meals.
Furthermore, the acupuncture sessions and herbs aimed to regulate the flow of Qi, nourish the Spleen and Kidney, and harmonize Liver Qi to alleviate emotional factors contributing to sugar cravings.
