A 36-year-old woman came to our clinic struggling with frequent urinary tract infections. She was concerned about all the antibiotics she was taking and possible long-term damage to her kidneys. This UTI acupuncture case study describes how we resolved her frequent urinary tract infections by strengthening her kidney function and clearing damp-heat from her bladder.
Understanding UTIs in Chinese Medicine
Chinese medicine sees urinary tract infections as imbalances caused by excess damp heat in the bladder. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can restore normal bladder function by transforming the accumulated dampness and expelling heat. Also, we provide long-lasting results by correcting the root-level imbalances responsible for triggering the damp heat in the first place.
UTI Acupuncture Case Study
Our patient had been getting frequent UTIs for the past five years, averaging one every four months. She had been relying on antibiotics all of this time, which we’re working less and less effective as time went on. She came to our clinic, hoping to find a more natural, longer-lasting treatment – and she did!
Her symptoms included burning pain, frequency, urgency, and cloudy-colored dark urine. At her first appointment, we conducted a comprehensive intake exam, which included asking her questions about her health, digestion, sleep patterns, history of urinary problems, diet, temperature, mood, and bowel function. Also, we examined her tongue for color, coating, shape, and moisture, and we felt her pulse for speed and quality. (Chinese medicine assesses 36 different pulse qualities to aid in effective diagnosis of internal health conditions).
UTI Treatment Strategy
Our patient in this UTI acupuncture case study had classic signs of damp-heat accumulation in the bladder. We used acupuncture to clear damp-heat from her bladder, nourish her kidneys (which rule the bladder), reduce stress (which was aggravating her condition), and strengthen her digestion (which was the root of her excess damp accumulation).
Acupuncture included some of the following points: SP9, SP3, LI11, ST36, KD3, KD6, BL20, BL23, and BL28. Supplemental points included Si shen cong and Yintang for calming and stress reduction. In addition to acupuncture, we prescribed a custom Chinese herbal medicine formula to further assist in clearing damp-heat from the bladder.
The patient received six treatments, once a week, during which acupuncture resolved her current bladder infection. She then came for maintenance treatment once a month for the next six months, and again she had no UTIs. When we checked in with her six months after her final treatment, she informed us that she still had no urinary tract infections.

What our Clients are Saying
I highly recommend Raleigh Acupuncture. I was getting urinary tract infections every three months since my son was born and it was driving me crazy. After six treatments I was cured and no longer got them. I was treated so well and am very happy.
Went to Raleigh Acupuncture for frequent UTIs. They took care of the problem and I don’t get them anymore. Thank you!
I have suffered from IC for over 10 years, with terrible cramping and burning urination, having to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes. I tried acupuncture out of desperation because I wasn’t getting relief anywhere else. It worked incredibly and took away most of my IC symptoms. Why didn’t I know about this sooner. Raleigh Acupuncture is a really good practice. They have kept me healthy for over three years now. I highly recommend them for treating IC.
