Vertigo responds best to acupuncture. Raleigh Acupuncture treats dozens of vertigo cases each year. Specific cases vary, but one thing in common is the great response. Dizziness and nausea ease, headaches resolve, and our patients feel better within the first few treatments. Today’s blog post talks about vertigo and why acupuncture is so effective at treating it.
Vertigo – The Problem
Vertigo creates a sensation of dizziness, often where the room seems to be spinning. It is sometimes triggered by looking down from a height, but can just as easily come on when walking, working or driving. Vertigo includes any temporary or ongoing dizzy spells. It is often accompanied by nausea, headaches and disorientation. About 8 million Americans suffer from chronic balance issues, including vertigo, on a regular basis. The good news is that vertigo responds best to acupuncture.
Acupuncture – The Solution
Here’s a recent testimonial from one of our vertigo patients:
“I had vertigo and dizziness for years. I run my own small business and it was starting to really affect my work. Had difficulty driving, and was starting to get nervous about getting into an accident at work. My vertigo was like the room spinning around, and the only way to make it stop was to close my eyes and lie down.
I was also burning up hot, but never had a fever. My cousin went to Raleigh Acupuncture so I gave it a try. They treated me with little needles and gave me chinese herbs. I’m not kidding, this stuff really works. My vertigo stopped happening for the first time in years, and I even stopped feeling so hot.
I get small bouts of vertigo now and then, but usually just a single treatment gets me better. I also understand why I get vertigo and what I can do to prevent it coming on. They were really good explaining how it worked, in a way that totally makes sense to me.”
How Acupuncture Resolves Vertigo
Here’s a quick overview describing why vertigo responds best to acupuncture.
Most of the time vertigo is caused by phlegm heat lodged in the head, blocking the ears. We all have imbalances in our health, and people prone to vertigo tend to have this particular imbalance. We all need to metabolize fluids to keep the body hydrated. In Chinese medicine water metabolism is controlled by the Spleen. It’s not really our actual spleen, but two thousand years ago that’s what the founders of Chinese medicine called it.
If spleen function is weak, water is not processed correctly, generating dampness in the body. If a person also has internal heat, that dampness transforms into phlegm. And phlegm loves to accumulate in the head. We know this because so many people get sinus congestion, which is phlegm in the head! When phlegm accumulates in the head and ears, it tends to trigger vertigo.
Chinese medicine practitioners always like to treat the root issue responsible for a health condition. So when someone comes in with vertigo, we treat the phlegm heat lodged in the head and ears. We do this by strengthening their Spleen function, clearing excess heat, and transforming phlegm from the head.
Which Acupuncture Points Treat Vertigo?
We use specific acupuncture points to accomplish this. For example, ST36 is a point on the leg below the knee that powerfully strengthens the spleen. Needling this point helps the body transform fluids better, reducing dampness in the body. Li11 is a point near the elbow that clears heat from the body. Without heat, dampness will not turn into phlegm. Another point, ST40, is a unique acupuncture point that transforms phlegm from the body, no matter where it resides.
There are many acupuncture points available to treat vertigo, depending on its particular presentation. Each treatment is designed to meet the needs of the patient. Vertigo responds best to acupuncture because (1) acupuncture addresses the root issue underlying vertigo, and (2) we custom design our treatment to meet the unique needs of each patient.
Another Vertigo Patient Testimonial
I came back from a trip to the Caribbean with a terrible case of vertigo and nausea. I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t work, couldn’t walk straight. And I had this throbbing headache all day long. It was driving me crazy. I tried acupuncture and in three sessions was completely cured! I was so impressed that I had them treat my back pain next. Only wish insurance covered the treatments.
[Editor’s Note: More and more insurance is covering acupuncture. Raleigh Acupuncture is in-network with Cigna and United Healthcare.]
What To Expect

I was diagnosed with dizziness and put on a medicine that made me more dizzy! My chiropractor said it was from my neck, but the adjustments didn’t help. So I tried acupuncture. Every time I bent down I would get so dizzy that I fell over. The doctor at Raleigh Acupuncture didn’t treat my neck. He said he was treating my organs to balance them and correct my water levels. I don’t care what he called it – it stopped my dizziness! I can bend over now without dizziness and can function like a normal person. They also got rid of my toe pain at the same time!
