Acupuncture Improves Concentration and Memory Best

August 24, 2017 By Mark Molinoff

There are times when all of us struggle with memory and concentration. At Raleigh Acupuncture, we treat a broad spectrum of people with concentration and memory issues. They include 90 year old’s wanting to improve their bridge game, college students looking for better grades, women going through menopause feeling like they are losing their minds, and young parents who can’t remember where they put their car keys. No matter what the reason, acupuncture improves concentration and memory best.

Acupuncture Improves Concentration for Senior

For an older patient, like our 90 year old bridge player, memory and concentration decline due to reduced blood flow to the brain, declining Kidney function, and reduced marrow production. In Chinese medicine, the Kidneys are responsible for the aging process. The stronger your Kidneys, the slower you age.

Also, the brain is thought to contain marrow. Reduced marrow production affects brain function. These functions naturally decline with age, even in healthy people. For the senior, acupuncture serves to bolster, nourish and replenish. Treatment will increase blood flow to the brain, boost Kidney function, and increase marrow production. The result will increase memory and concentration.

Acupuncture Improves Concentration for Young People

For the college student (or any young person dealing with memory and concentration issues), the situation is quite different. A student facing finals week might have poor concentration due to stress, exhaustion or fear. In this case, the memory problem is situational. While we can’t change the situation, we can affect how they react to the situation.

Acupuncture helps the student manage the stressful situation, replenishes their energy by strengthening their metabolism, and calms their fear by nourishing their Kidneys. Yes, that’s right. Kidneys again! In Chinese medicine, fear is rooted in Kidney function. This approach helps the student remain calm, be more focused, have better recall and concentration, and have less fear as they perform in school and take their exams.

Acupuncture Improves Concentration for Menopausal Women

Women going through menopause have trouble with memory and concentration due to dramatic hormone changes in the body. It is common for women going through menopause to feel like they are losing their mind. They are unable to concentrate for any length of time and can no longer remember things. Multitasking, which they always relied on to get through the day, has become beyond their reach.

Much of this is caused by hormone changes. Their body and mind have been used to functioning in a stable chemical environment over the past 30 years. All of a sudden that environment is completely changed. Their brain is confused and disoriented.

Acupuncture helps women adjust to their new hormone level and claim it as their own. In Chinese medicine we are not big advocates for hormone replacement therapy as a way to avoid the unpleasant side effects of menopause (memory, concentration, hot flashes, night sweats, etc). We would rather help women adjust to their new hormone levels so they can move forward with their lives naturally.

Once they have adjusted to these new levels, the side effects of menopause resolve themselves. Our treatment for memory and concentration will also help resolve the other common symptoms of menopause like hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia.

Acupuncture Improves Concentration for Moms with Young Children

Moms with young children often have memory and concentration challenges. In their case it is due to a combination of blood deficiency and exhaustion. Why blood deficiency? Women loose a great deal of blood during child birth and it takes time to replenish.

Also, breast milk is considered like blood in Chinese medicine, so a woman breast feeding is using more blood. Blood is needed for brain function and a lack of sufficient blood can impact memory and concentration.

Every mom also knows that having young children means not getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep directly affects memory and concentration. While we can not create more hours in the day, we can boost your energy to help you get through the day.

The strategy to help moms is two-fold. First, acupuncture builds, nourishes and replenishes blood. This gives your brain more resources to think, plan, concentrate and remember. Second, acupuncture boosts metabolism, to generate more energy from the food you eat. This maximizes the energy you gain from meals. Efficient metabolism also allows you to lose weight, as your body turns food into energy and not fat. More blood and energy will help improve memory and concentration.

Acupuncture Improves Concentration For All

There are many more situations that result in poor memory and concentration. We handle them on a case by case basis, providing the support each person needs to overcome the obstacles causing their problems. Acupuncture is a custom made medicine, individualized and specific for the person and their unique situation.

What To Expect

Our needles are sterile, single-use and hair thin. You will hardly feel them. Treatments are relaxing. Many of our patients fall asleep during their sessions.

What our Clients are Saying

My wife made me come to acupuncture because I was always forgetting what she told me. Now I remember.  So is this supposed to be good for me?  I’m kidding!  Yes, it helped. I’m not sure how, but it did work.  I’m 90 years old, so I’m not supposed to remember everything, but I feel like my brain got a tune-up.  They put up with my jokes here.  And they fixed my neck pain too.

Joseph P

I suffered memory loss and inability to concentrate following a concussion several years ago.  I made slow progress, but was still struggling in this area.  Acupuncture has truly helped. I now have better recall and I don’t get that foggy brain as much.  I’m less distracted as well.  I told my doctor about acupuncture for concussion patients.  I think everyone should get this done as part of their rehab.  I could have used this three years ago.

Melanie T

I’m 87 years old, in good health all things considered.  But my “senior moments” were starting to drive me crazy.  I found their website and read about what acupuncture could do for memory and decided to give it a try.  After several treatments I’m not ready to recite Shakespeare, but I’m not losing my car keys as frequently.  My mind is definitely retaining information better, and I’m grateful for that.  I will continue with the acupuncture and see what else it can do.
