Acupuncture for Achilles Tendinitis

September 24, 2026 By Mark Molinoff

Acupuncture for Achilles Tendinitis offers a natural approach to reducing pain, improving circulation, and helping the injured tendon heal.

Achilles tendinitis can turn ordinary activities—walking the dog, climbing stairs, playing tennis, or going for a morning run—into an unwelcome negotiation with your ankle. Acupuncture for Achilles Tendinitis offers a natural approach to reducing pain, improving circulation, and helping the injured tendon heal so you can return to the activities you enjoy.

Achilles tendinitis is inflammation and irritation of the Achilles tendon, the strong band of tissue connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone.

The condition commonly develops from repetitive stress. Runners and athletes are frequent sufferers, but you do not have to be training for a marathon to develop it. Tight calf muscles, sudden increases in activity, prolonged standing, improper footwear, and changes in walking mechanics can all contribute.

What Does Achilles Tendinitis Feel Like?

The most common symptom is pain along the back of the ankle or just above the heel. The area may feel stiff when you first get out of bed and loosen somewhat as you begin moving. There may also be tenderness, swelling, or discomfort when pushing off the foot.

Unfortunately, continuing to aggravate the tendon can turn a relatively manageable injury into a stubborn chronic problem. Tendons are not famous for their speed when it comes to healing. They apparently missed the memo about our busy schedules.

Treatment therefore focuses not only on controlling pain but also on improving the environment in which the tendon repairs itself.

How Does Acupuncture Help Achilles Tendinitis?

Acupuncture for Achilles Tendinitis addresses both the painful tendon and the surrounding muscles and tissues contributing to the problem. Treatment may include acupuncture points around the ankle along with points in the calf and elsewhere in the body.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, pain frequently develops when the smooth circulation of Qi and Blood through the channels becomes obstructed. An injury to the Achilles tendon can create local stagnation, producing pain, stiffness, and swelling. Acupuncture helps restore circulation through the affected channels while supporting the body’s natural healing response.

Modern research also provides useful insight into acupuncture’s effects on musculoskeletal pain. Acupuncture can influence pain signaling, local blood flow, inflammation, muscle tension, and the nervous system’s regulation of pain.

Why Treat the Calf as Well as the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon does not work alone. It is closely connected to the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles of the calf. When these muscles become chronically tight, they can place additional strain on the tendon.

That is why acupuncture for Achilles Tendinitis often includes treatment of tight or dysfunctional calf muscles. Acupuncture and dry needling can release muscular tension and trigger points, improve circulation, and reduce the mechanical stress being transferred to the Achilles tendon.

Treatment is individualized. We consider where the pain is located, what movements aggravate it, how long it has been present, and whether other areas—such as the calf, ankle, foot, knee, or hip—may be contributing.

Three Examples of Achilles Tendinitis Treatment

One patient was a recreational runner who developed Achilles pain after increasing his weekly mileage. His treatment focused on the painful tendon and significant calf tightness. After several treatments, his morning stiffness decreased and he gradually returned to running.

Another patient developed Achilles tendinitis after spending long days standing and walking at work. Acupuncture reduced the local pain and swelling while treatment of the calf helped relieve tension pulling on the tendon. She reported that walking became progressively more comfortable.

A third patient was an avid pickleball player who had ignored heel pain for several months—a strategy that, surprisingly, had not impressed his Achilles tendon. Acupuncture for Achilles Tendinitis focused on the chronic local irritation, calf tightness, and restoring normal function. As symptoms improved, he gradually resumed playing.

When Should You Seek Treatment for Achilles Pain?

Early treatment is generally preferable to waiting until Achilles pain becomes chronic. If you notice persistent stiffness, tenderness, swelling, or pain when walking, running, or pushing off your foot, it is worth addressing.

A sudden severe pain, a popping sensation, significant weakness, or inability to push off the foot may indicate an Achilles rupture and requires prompt medical evaluation.

For uncomplicated Achilles tendinitis, acupuncture can be an excellent part of a comprehensive treatment plan. At Raleigh Acupuncture Associates, we tailor treatment to the individual rather than simply treating the name of the condition.

If Achilles pain is keeping you from walking, exercising, playing sports, or simply moving comfortably, schedule an appointment. Our goal is to reduce your pain, restore healthy function, and get you back on your feet—literally.

What our Clients are Saying

I had terrible Achilles tendinitis for six months from playing too much tennis. The surgeon was pressing for surgery to “clean up” the tendon, but I just didn’t want to go there. I was referred to Raleigh Acupuncture by my sister, who went there for hip pain. She had great results so I tried. Thank goodness I did. They had my Achilles back to normal in less than a dozen treatments. I’m playing tennis again with absolutely no pain! I highly recommend them for Achilles issues.

Risa J

I’m a runner and had been dealing with Achilles tendinitis for over a year. The doctor said I would have to have surgery eventually so I was just dealing with the pain and biding my time. Then a friend suggested acupuncture and recommended Raleigh Acupuncture as specializing in Achilles issues. I made and appointment and was impressed from the very beginning. Their evaluation was very thorough and they explained everything that acupuncture could do.

The treatments were comfortable, and more importantly, they eased my pain significantly. After six treatments I was running without any Achilles pain! I’ve totally put the idea of surgery out of my mind since I’m running without pain again. Anyone who has Achilles issues should speak with Raleigh Acupuncture. They can definitely help you.
