Arthritis has a way of turning ordinary activities—opening a jar, climbing stairs, getting out of a chair—into events requiring advance planning. For people living with chronic joint pain and stiffness, acupuncture for arthritis offers a drug-free treatment option aimed at reducing pain, improving mobility, and helping the body function more comfortably.
Arthritis is a group of conditions that cause pain, stiffness, swelling, or degeneration in and around the joints.
The two most familiar forms are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis involves progressive changes in cartilage and other joint tissues and commonly affects the knees, hips, hands, spine, and feet. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks joint tissues, producing inflammation that can affect multiple joints.
Although these conditions have different causes, both can make everyday movement considerably less enjoyable.
Does acupuncture help arthritis pain and stiffness?
Research suggests that acupuncture can help people with both types of arthritis. Treatment does not rebuild worn cartilage or reverse structural joint damage. Instead, acupuncture is used to help reduce pain and inflammation, calm muscle tension around affected joints, and improve function.
Acupuncture stimulates sensory nerves and influences the nervous system’s regulation of pain. Research also indicates effects on local circulation and inflammatory signaling. For the patient, however, the practical question is usually simpler: Can I walk, bend, sleep, or use my hands with less discomfort?
That is the goal of acupuncture for arthritis—not to promise a new knee, shoulder, finger joint, or hip where the old one has been complaining for twenty years, but to help the one you have work as comfortably as possible.
How does Chinese medicine approach arthritis?
Chinese medicine approaches arthritis somewhat differently. Rather than focusing exclusively on the damaged joint, the practitioner considers the location and character of the pain, muscle tension, swelling, mobility, and the patient’s overall health.
Treatment is therefore individualized. Two people with knee arthritis may receive different acupuncture point prescriptions because their symptoms and overall patterns are different.
Traditional Chinese medicine also considers broader aspects of health, including sleep, digestion, energy, circulation, and how the body responds to stress. These factors do not mean that poor digestion “causes” arthritis. Rather, they help practitioners understand the patient as a whole person instead of treating a knee, hip, or hand as though it arrived at the clinic by itself.
Modern acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine can work comfortably alongside conventional medical care, physical therapy, appropriate exercise, and other strategies recommended by your healthcare providers.
What happens during acupuncture treatment for arthritis?
With acupuncture for arthritis, needles may be placed around the painful joint as well as in related muscles and other areas of the body. Depending on the condition, electroacupuncture may also be used. This involves applying a gentle electrical current between selected acupuncture needles to provide additional stimulation.
Consider three examples from clinical practice.
A 68-year-old woman with knee osteoarthritis had difficulty climbing stairs and experienced stiffness after sitting. Treatment focused on the knee and surrounding muscles. Over several weeks, she reported less pain, easier movement, and greater confidence using stairs.
A 57-year-old man with arthritis in his hands struggled with gripping tools and opening containers. Acupuncture focused on reducing pain and stiffness in his hands and forearms. He gradually noticed improved flexibility and less discomfort with everyday tasks.
A 72-year-old patient with hip arthritis experienced aching in the hip along with significant muscle tightness through the gluteal region and thigh. Treatment addressed both the joint area and surrounding muscular tension. Although the underlying arthritis remained, walking became more comfortable and sleep improved because nighttime aching decreased.
How many acupuncture treatments are needed for arthritis?
Arthritis is generally a chronic condition, so treatment usually requires more than one or two visits. The number of sessions depends on the severity and duration of the arthritis, the joints involved, overall health, and how strongly the patient responds to acupuncture.
Some patients notice changes within several treatments. Others improve more gradually. Once symptoms stabilize, treatment frequency can be reduced, with periodic maintenance care used when appropriate.
We also encourage patients to remain active within their abilities. Strength, mobility, healthy body weight, adequate sleep, good nutrition, and management of other health conditions all matter. Acupuncture is not intended to replace these fundamentals. It is another tool for helping control symptoms and maintain quality of life.

What our Clients are Saying
My knees were so bad with arthritis that I couldn’t play golf. My wife did research on the internet and said acupuncture might help. I went in not expecting much. He told me it would take three to six treatments to see if it would work. My case was tougher because I’m overweight. Sure enough, after five treatments the pain started easing. I needed twelve treatments total, but my knees improved so much I’m playing golf again. I go in for what he calls tune-ups every month, but I don’t mind. The acupuncture keeps my knees not hurting. I’ve recommended it to my golf buddies and they’ve had success as well.
I had been getting botox injections for my face over the past five years, and it worked well. But a friend said that acupuncture could get more lasting results in a more natural way. I inquired at Raleigh Acupuncture and was surprised at how affordable it was. They explained that as an added bonus, I would receive acupuncture to help other issues at the same time that they treated my face. So I took the opportunity to deal with some arthritis in my hands and a bad knee. The facial rejuvenation was amazing. It happens over the course of 12 weeks and I literally saw wrinkles disappear! After each treatment I felt so relaxed. I’m hooked on acupuncture now, both for my face and the rest of me. The staff at Raleigh Acupuncture are very professional, friendly and skilled. I felt safe and comfortable during each visit.
All of my joints were hurting. I’ve got fibromyalgia and it effects me by making my joints hurt. The pain would move around from place to place, first the hip, the next day the shoulder, then the knee, etc. The practitioner at Raleigh Acupuncture explained that the best way to treat my kind of moving joint pain was to treat me holistically. Instead of treating the hip one day, the shoulder the next, they treated the root of the pain. They said this type of treatment would also improve my mood and my sleep. Right on all counts. I started feeling better after the second treatment. It’s like all of the joints just settled down and stopped giving me trouble. I had less flares and the intensity of the pain went way down. My sleep is better, not just because I have less pain. I’m more relaxed and less stressed. I’ve made this treatment a regular part of my life. I’m very grateful.
I had terrible pain in my hands from arthritis, especially my thumbs. I could not even open a jar anymore – there was no strength. My neighbor was seeing an acupuncturist at Raleigh Acupuncture, so I made an appointment. They were so sweet. I was apprehensive about the needles, but they told me they would use extra small ones, which I hate to admit, but I couldn’t even see without my glasses. They put needles in my hands, arms and in different places on my legs as well. I believe it made a substantial difference. My hands stopped hurting all the time and my grip strength increased. My thumbs still give me some trouble, but not nearly like before. I’d say I am 80% improved with my arthritis. Now I have all of my friends going to them!
