Acupuncture for Bell’s Palsy

August 31, 2026 By Mark Molinoff

Acupuncture for Bell’s palsy heals damaged facial muscles and nerves by improving qi and blood circulation.

Bell’s palsy is a sudden, usually temporary weakness or paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face caused by dysfunction of the facial nerve. It often appears suddenly and without warning. One side of the face becomes partially paralyzed, making it difficult to smile, close the eye completely, speak clearly, or drink normally. Acupuncture for Bell’s palsy heals damaged facial muscles and nerves by improving qi and blood circulation and enhancing the body’s innate ability to recover.

What causes Bell’s palsy and why does the face become weak?

The facial nerve controls many of the muscles responsible for blinking, smiling, frowning, and other facial expressions. With Bell’s palsy, inflammation and swelling affect this nerve, interfering with its ability to communicate normally with the facial muscles.

The exact trigger is not always known, although viral infections and the immune response they provoke are thought to play a role. Symptoms may include facial drooping, difficulty closing one eye, changes in taste, sensitivity to sound, drooling, and discomfort around the jaw or behind the ear.

Because sudden facial weakness can also be a sign of stroke or another neurological problem, new facial paralysis should always receive prompt medical evaluation. Acupuncture should complement appropriate medical care, not replace it.

How does acupuncture help Bell’s palsy recovery?

Treatment with acupuncture for bell’s palsy typically involves carefully selected points on the face along with additional points elsewhere on the body. The goal is to stimulate affected muscles and nerves while supporting circulation and reducing tension around the face, jaw, and neck. From a modern physiological perspective, acupuncture provides sensory stimulation to the nervous system and influences local blood flow, neuromuscular activity, and inflammatory signaling. Research has shown impressive results.

Chinese medicine approaches the condition somewhat differently, viewing facial paralysis within the larger pattern of the patient’s health. Sleep, stress, digestion, gut health, immunity, energy, and other symptoms may therefore influence the treatment plan. The face gets most of the attention, understandably, but the rest of the patient has not ceased to exist.

What does acupuncture treatment for Bell’s palsy feel like?

Facial acupuncture tends to be gentler than many people imagine. Very fine needles are placed at specific locations around the forehead, cheek, mouth, jaw, and sometimes the scalp or neck. Additional acupuncture points may be selected on the arms and legs according to the individual presentation.

One patient came to us shortly after developing significant weakness on one side of her face. She had difficulty smiling and fully closing her eye. Treatment focused on gentle facial stimulation and supporting the affected nerve. Over several weeks, she gradually regained facial movement and symmetry.

Can acupuncture help when Bell’s palsy recovery has stalled?

Recovery varies from person to person. Most people improve substantially within weeks of starting treatment.

One patient came to our clinic three weeks after the onset of Bell’s palsy. They had already completed treatment with antiviral medication and steroids and had experienced about 10% improvement, but their recovery had stalled. After beginning acupuncture, their facial movement began improving again. Over the next four weeks, they experienced an additional 60% improvement, with noticeable gains in facial strength, movement, and symmetry.

Another patient came to us six months after developing a severe case of Bell’s palsy. They were still having difficulty closing one eye and smiling normally and continued to experience discomfort behind the ear. Despite the length of time since the initial onset, they responded very well to treatment. After eight acupuncture sessions, they reported approximately 80% improvement, including substantial improvement in facial movement and eye closure and a reduction in discomfort. Acupuncture provided targeted stimulation to the affected facial nerves and muscles, supporting the return of more normal facial function.

When should you begin acupuncture for Bell’s palsy?

Earlier treatment is often preferable, provided serious causes of facial weakness have first been medically evaluated. Treatment frequency depends on the severity of the paralysis, how recently it began, and how quickly function is returning.

It is also important to remember that recovery rarely proceeds in a perfectly straight line. A smile may improve before the eye does, or the cheek may begin moving while the mouth remains stubbornly unimpressed. Treatment should change as recovery changes.

At Raleigh Acupuncture Associates, we evaluate each patient individually rather than applying the same facial-point recipe to everyone. If you have recently developed Bell’s palsy or continue to experience facial weakness after the initial episode, contact us to discuss whether acupuncture may be appropriate as part of your recovery plan.

What our Clients are Saying

I woke up in the morning and could not feel the left side of my face. I could not close my left eye. I have been to several doctors and have taken different drugs. I have a little improvement but majority of the problem remained. Out of desperation, I called Raleigh Acupuncture to check out if they treat this condition. They said they have successfully treated this condition and encourage me to come in as soon as possible because the sooner I come in, the better. I came in that same day. To my surprise, after just the first treatment, I could close my left eye. That was huge for me. Because I did not need to tape my left eye shut when I went to sleep for the 1st time since this happen. And during the day, I did not need to keep putting in drops to moisten it. I continued my treatment with them. I got better and better. I started to have sensation coming back. I could drink water without spilling all over myself. I could smile. Anyway, I am 100% cured. If you have this condition, don’t wait, call them and get treated right away. It surely saves a lot of anxiety and struggles.
