Bursitis has a way of making surprisingly ordinary movements feel like unreasonable requests. Reaching into a cabinet, sleeping on one side, climbing stairs, or getting out of the car can suddenly hurt far more than the activity seems to deserve. Acupuncture for bursitis is a safe and effective treatment to reduce pain, calm irritated tissues, and relieve muscle tension and movement patterns at the root of the problem.
Bursitis is inflammation or irritation of a bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that cushions areas where tendons, muscles, and bones move against one another.
Bursae are found throughout the body, but bursitis commonly affects the shoulder, hip, elbow, and knee. Repetitive activity, prolonged pressure, injury, muscle imbalance, or changes in joint mechanics can all contribute to irritation.
Can Acupuncture Help Reduce Bursitis Pain and Inflammation?
Acupuncture treatment for bursitis is not simply a matter of putting needles directly over the painful spot. We evaluate the surrounding muscles, tendons, joints, and movement patterns to determine what may be keeping the area irritated.
Research suggests that acupuncture reduces inflammation by directing qi and blood circulation to the injured site. Treatment restores healthier movement and activity while reducing pain and muscular guarding.
Treatments include local acupuncture points near the affected joint along with points farther away that correspond to the involved channels. Dry needling techniques are also used when appropriate to address tight or dysfunctional muscles that are placing additional stress on the area.
Acupuncture for Hip Bursitis and Greater Trochanteric Pain
Pain on the outside of the hip is often described as hip bursitis, although the problem can involve more than the bursa alone. The surrounding gluteal tendons and muscles may also contribute to what clinicians often call greater trochanteric pain syndrome.
Patients frequently report pain when lying on the affected side, walking uphill, climbing stairs, or standing after sitting. Treatment may address the lateral hip as well as tight or dysfunctional muscles in the gluteal region, lower back, and thigh.
One patient came to us after months of lateral hip pain that made sleeping on one side nearly impossible. Acupuncture focused on the painful hip and surrounding muscular tension. Over a series of treatments, the tenderness resolved and sleeping became considerably more comfortable.
Does Acupuncture Help Shoulder Bursitis?
Shoulder bursitis can make reaching overhead, putting on a jacket, fastening a seat belt, or sleeping surprisingly difficult. Because the shoulder is such a mobile joint, irritated tissues rarely operate in isolation.
With acupuncture for bursitis affecting the shoulder, we assess the rotator cuff muscles, upper back, neck, and shoulder blade mechanics in addition to the painful area itself. The goal is to reduce pain while addressing muscular tension that may be contributing to continued irritation.
For example, one patient developed shoulder pain after repeatedly working overhead during a home renovation project. Rest helped somewhat, but symptoms returned whenever he resumed normal activity. Acupuncture and targeted needling of tight shoulder muscles gradually improved his range of motion and reduced the pain. The home project survived as well.
Other Areas Where Bursitis Can Cause Pain
Bursitis can also develop around the elbow, knee, heel, and other joints exposed to repetitive stress or pressure. Treatment depends on the location and, more importantly, what appears to be driving the irritation.
A recreational runner came to us with persistent discomfort around the outside of the hip and upper thigh. She had already reduced her mileage, but the pain returned each time she increased activity. Examination revealed substantial tension through the hip musculature. Acupuncture was combined with recommendations for gradual activity progression. Her symptoms steadily improved, allowing her to return to running more comfortably.
These cases illustrate an important point: two people with the same diagnosis may need different treatment strategies. Acupuncture is most useful when treatment is tailored to the individual rather than applied as a one-size-fits-all protocol.
When Should You Seek Treatment for Bursitis?
Mild bursitis sometimes improves with activity modification, appropriate exercise, and time. Persistent or recurring pain deserves closer attention, particularly when it interferes with sleep, work, exercise, or normal daily movement.
It is also important to obtain medical evaluation when pain follows significant trauma or is accompanied by substantial swelling, redness, warmth, fever, weakness, or an inability to use the joint normally. Not every painful shoulder or hip is bursitis, and getting the diagnosis right matters.
