Living with chronic pain can change the way you move, sleep, work, exercise, and even think about your day. When discomfort has been present for months or years, it may begin to feel less like a symptom and more like an unwelcome roommate who refuses to move out. Acupuncture for chronic pain offers a whole-body approach designed to reduce discomfort, improve function, and address patterns that may be keeping the problem going.
Chronic pain is pain that persists or repeatedly returns for three months or longer, often continuing beyond the expected healing time of an injury.
How Acupuncture Helps Persistent Pain
Pain is rarely as simple as one injured muscle or irritated joint. Long-standing pain may involve muscle tension, inflammation, restricted circulation, irritated nerves, scar tissue, repetitive strain, or changes in the way the nervous system processes pain signals.
Acupuncture works on several of these mechanisms at the same time. Research suggests that acupuncture can influence pain-processing pathways, stimulate the release of the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals, regulate nervous system activity, and affect local circulation and inflammatory responses.
This helps explain why acupuncture for chronic pain can be useful even when an X-ray or MRI does not reveal an obvious explanation for the severity of someone’s symptoms. We treat the person experiencing the pain, not simply the image on the screen.
How Chinese Medicine Understands Chronic Pain
Chinese medicine has long viewed pain as a sign that the body’s normal movement of Qi and Blood has become disrupted. An old Chinese medicine principle states, in essence, that when there is free flow there is less pain; when flow becomes obstructed, pain develops.
That obstruction can result from an old injury, repetitive activity, muscle tension, weakness, inflammation, stress, or other underlying imbalances.
Treatment therefore involves more than placing needles where something hurts. We evaluate the location and character of the pain along with sleep, energy, digestion, stress, temperature sensitivity, previous injuries, and other health patterns.
Acupuncture points are then selected to restore healthy circulation through the affected channels while supporting the underlying systems involved in recovery.
What Conditions Can Acupuncture Treat?
People seek acupuncture for chronic pain for many different conditions, including persistent neck and shoulder pain, low back pain, sciatica, arthritis, headaches, migraines, tendon problems, repetitive strain injuries, fibromyalgia, and lingering pain following an injury.
Treatment is individualized because two people with seemingly identical back pain may have very different patterns.
One patient in our clinic had experienced chronic low back pain for several years and found prolonged sitting increasingly uncomfortable. Acupuncture focused on releasing tight lumbar and hip muscles while improving circulation through the affected channels. With consistent treatment, his pain decreased and sitting became considerably easier.
Another patient came to us with chronic neck and shoulder tension accompanied by frequent headaches. Her treatments addressed the tight muscles around the neck and upper back as well as her underlying stress pattern. As the muscular tension diminished, her headaches became less frequent and less intense.
Why Chronic Pain Often Requires Consistent Treatment
Chronic problems generally take longer to change than acute ones. If your shoulder started hurting yesterday, the body has not had much time to establish a pattern. If it has hurt since the first iPhone came out, we may need a little more patience.
Treatment frequency depends on the severity and duration of the condition. Many patients begin with weekly acupuncture, while more significant problems may initially benefit from more frequent treatment.
A third patient came to our office with longstanding knee pain from osteoarthritis. Walking and stairs had gradually become more difficult. Treatment focused on reducing pain and inflammation around the knee while addressing related muscle tension and supporting overall function. Over a series of treatments, she reported less pain and greater confidence with everyday movement.
The goal is not merely temporary relief after each appointment. We want improvement to become progressively more stable between treatments.
When to Consider Acupuncture for Chronic Pain
You do not have to wait until pain becomes unbearable before seeking treatment. In fact, earlier intervention can sometimes prevent a recurring problem from becoming deeply established.
At Raleigh Acupuncture Associates, we begin by listening carefully to your history and evaluating how the pain affects your daily life. From there, we develop an individualized treatment plan.
If persistent pain is interfering with your sleep, work, exercise, hobbies, or ability to enjoy everyday activities, acupuncture for chronic pain may help you move toward greater comfort and function.

What our Clients are Saying
I’m a golfer and started having trouble with my left shoulder over a year ago. My doctor wanted to do surgery, but I wanted to try other alternatives first. So I tried acupuncture. The folks at Raleigh Acupuncture were very professional, reasonably priced and did excellent work. They resolved my shoulder pain completely. I use them now for other pains in my post-50 body! Thank you Raleigh Acupuncture.
I’m a dentist and over the last 20 years the nature of my work and positions required by my work had resulted in chronic neck pain. It affected my sleep, limited my ability to exercise, and was just a real pain in the neck! A friend at church recommended Raleigh Acupuncture and I gave it a try. I have to say that I was a bit skeptical, but gave it a try because I had tried a number other therapies with no success. I’m glad I did. They resolved my neck pain completely!
All of my joints were hurting. I’ve got fibromyalgia and it effects me by making my joints hurt. The pain would move around from place to place, first the hip, the next day the shoulder, then the knee, etc. The practitioner at Raleigh Acupuncture explained that the best way to treat my kind of moving joint pain was to treat me holistically. Instead of treating the hip one day, the shoulder the next, they treated the root of the pain. They said this type of treatment would also improve my mood and my sleep. Right on all counts. I started feeling better after the second treatment. It’s like all of the joints just settled down and stopped giving me trouble. I had less flares and the intensity of the pain went way down. My sleep is better, not just because I have less pain. I’m more relaxed and less stressed. I’ve made this treatment a regular part of my life. I’m very grateful.
I suffered from low back pain for years and tried many different remedies. When I came to Raleigh Acupuncture, they really listened to understand my issues. I can honestly say that they cured my chronic back pain. I didn’t think it was possible, after all these years. I highly recommend this practice. The doctors take the time and do good work.
