Acupuncture for Dry Eyes

September 7, 2026 By Mark Molinoff

Acupuncture for dry eyes nourishes the eyes directly, addressing the factors that interfere with healthy tear production.

Dry, burning, irritated eyes can make reading, driving, working at a computer, or simply getting through the day surprisingly uncomfortable. For some people, artificial tears provide enough relief. For others, the drops seem to disappear faster than socks in a dryer. Acupuncture for dry eyes nourishes the eyes directly, addressing the factors that interfere with healthy tear production.

Dry eye disease is a condition in which the eyes do not produce enough tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly to adequately lubricate and protect the surface of the eye.

What Causes Chronic Dry Eyes?

Dry eyes become more common with age, but they can occur at almost any stage of life. Common contributors include prolonged screen use, contact lenses, certain medications, hormonal changes, autoimmune conditions, inflammation, and dysfunction of the meibomian glands that produce the oily layer of tears.

Symptoms may include burning, grittiness, redness, light sensitivity, blurred vision, eye fatigue, or the sensation that something is stuck in the eye. Ironically, dry eyes can also cause excessive watering because irritated eyes sometimes respond by producing reflex tears that do not provide lasting lubrication.

Treatment usually begins with appropriate evaluation by an eye-care professional. Depending on the cause and severity, conventional treatment may include artificial tears, warm compresses, prescription medications, or other therapies.

How Does Acupuncture Help Dry Eyes?

At Raleigh Acupuncture Associates, we use a specialized protocol that has produced encouraging results in our clinic. Treatment involves carefully selected acupuncture points around the eyes as well as points elsewhere on the body. Research has examined acupuncture for dry eye disease, with clinical trials and systematic reviews reporting improvements in measures such as dry-eye symptoms, tear-film stability, and tear production.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, dry eyes are not viewed as an isolated eye problem. The treatment pattern may involve circulation, inflammation, stress, digestion, and overall constitutional health. This whole-person approach allows us to tailor treatment while keeping the primary goal straightforward: helping your eyes feel and function better.

What Does Dry Eye Acupuncture Treatment Feel Like?

The needles used around the eyes are extremely thin and are placed carefully in specific locations. We do not needle the eyeball—a clarification that usually produces an immediate and understandable sigh of relief.

Treatment is individualized according to symptoms, overall health, and response to previous sessions. Some patients notice changes relatively quickly, while chronic cases generally require a series of treatments.

Our protocol combines local acupuncture with distal points selected according to Chinese medicine principles. When appropriate, we also consider broader factors such as stress, sleep, digestion, gut health, inflammation, and immune function. The objective is not simply to chase symptoms but to support the systems that influence eye health.

Three Patients Who Sought Acupuncture for Dry Eyes

One patient came to us after years of relying on artificial tears throughout the day. Her eyes felt gritty and tired, particularly after several hours on the computer. Following a course of treatment, she reported substantially less irritation and found herself reaching for eye drops much less frequently.

Another patient experienced persistent burning and redness that became progressively worse late in the day. After several acupuncture sessions, the burning diminished and his eyes remained comfortable for longer periods between treatments.

A third patient had chronic dry eyes accompanied by significant sensitivity to wind and air conditioning. She described constantly planning where she sat in restaurants, cars, and offices to avoid moving air. With treatment, her eyes became less reactive, allowing her to tolerate everyday environments much more comfortably.

Individual results vary, but cases like these illustrate why we have continued refining our dry-eye protocol.

Research-Informed Acupuncture for Dry Eyes in Raleigh

Dry eye disease can be stubborn, particularly when symptoms have persisted for months or years. acupuncture for dry eyes provides another option for patients who have not achieved sufficient relief with conventional approaches alone or who want to incorporate acupuncture into a broader treatment plan.

At Raleigh Acupuncture Associates, our goal is not to promise miracles or suggest that one therapy solves every case. It is to provide thoughtful, evidence-informed care and determine whether acupuncture can meaningfully improve your symptoms.

If dry, irritated, burning, or tired eyes are interfering with your daily life, contact us to discuss whether acupuncture for dry eyes may be appropriate for you.

What our Clients are Saying

I’ve had dry eyes ever since my Lasik surgery. The doctor said it would resolve but it never did. That was two years ago. I had been using eye drops about ten times a day to deal with the discomfort. My brother-in-law suggested I try acupuncture. It worked great. The doctor said the treatment “returned my eyes to their normal state”. That’s what it feels like to me. And it’s lasted. Thank you Raleigh Acupuncture for your good work.

Jethro S

Ever since moving here five years ago I had terrible dry eyes. I thought it was allergies, but the doctor ruled that out. After trying everything under the sun, I tried acupuncture. What an amazing experience. It’s like my eyes are back to normal when I was living in Chicago. High praise for Raleigh Acupuncture. They know what they are doing!

Fabian B

Acupuncture treatment helped my chronic dry eyes. Whereas I had to use drops on a daily basis before my treatment, afterwards I didn’t need the drops any longer. The scratchy feeling in my eyes was gone, and my eyes were not nearly as red. I’ve sent two co-workers to Raleigh Acupuncture since being treated, both for eye conditions, and they also got relief. I recommend this practice to anyone struggling with dry eyes.
