Acupuncture for Knee Pain

July 30, 2026 By Mark Molinoff

Acupuncture for knee pain offers a non-surgical, evidence-based approach to reduce discomfort, improve mobility, and support natural healing.

Knee pain has an uncanny ability to make everyday activities feel like Olympic events. Climbing stairs becomes a strategic exercise, getting out of a chair requires negotiation, and kneeling to tie a shoe suddenly seems like a questionable life choice. Fortunately, acupuncture for knee pain offers a non-surgical, evidence-informed approach that helps reduce discomfort, improve mobility, and support the body’s natural healing processes.

Knee pain is discomfort arising from the joint, surrounding muscles, ligaments, tendons, or cartilage that can limit movement and interfere with daily activities.

Whether your symptoms developed gradually or appeared after an injury, acupuncture and Chinese medicine focus on reducing inflammation, improving circulation, and restoring healthy movement while treating the individual—not just the knee.

What causes knee pain and why does it linger?

The knee is one of the hardest-working joints in the body. It absorbs force with every step, twist, squat, and jump. Common causes of knee pain include osteoarthritis, ligament sprains, meniscus injuries, tendonitis, bursitis, overuse injuries, and muscle imbalances.

Inflammation is often part of the picture, especially after injury or with degenerative conditions. Even after tissues have healed, the nervous system may continue sending pain signals, creating persistent discomfort long after the original injury has improved.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, pain is frequently associated with stagnation of Qi and Blood within the channels that pass through the knee. The goal of acupuncture is to restore smooth circulation, reduce inflammation, relax tight muscles, and encourage the body’s own healing mechanisms.

How does acupuncture help knee pain?

Research suggests acupuncture helps stimulate the nervous system, increase local blood flow, regulate inflammatory chemicals, and encourage the release of natural pain-relieving compounds such as endorphins.

During treatment, fine sterile needles are placed around the knee as well as at carefully selected points elsewhere on the body. This whole-body approach recognizes that muscle tension in the hips, thighs, calves, or even the lower back may contribute to knee mechanics.

Treatment plans are individualized. Someone recovering from a pickleball injury has different needs than someone managing decades of arthritis. (Your knee has little interest in whether the calendar says you’re twenty-five or seventy-five—it simply wants the load distributed more intelligently.)

Many patients also benefit from combining acupuncture with dry needling (which we provide), stretching exercises, strengthening programs, and activity modification when appropriate.

What does treatment look like in real life?

One recreational pickleball player developed sharp pain along the inside of the knee after increasing court time. After several acupuncture sessions combined with gentle strengthening exercises, pain gradually diminished, allowing a return to regular play with improved confidence.

A retired teacher with osteoarthritis had struggled with stiffness every morning and difficulty climbing stairs. Over several weeks of acupuncture treatment, inflammation decreased, walking became more comfortable, and daily activities required considerably less effort.

Another patient experienced persistent knee discomfort following arthroscopic surgery despite completing physical therapy. Acupuncture was added to support recovery, reduce muscle guarding, and improve range of motion. As treatment progressed, pain steadily declined while functional movement improved.

While every patient responds differently, these examples illustrate how acupuncture can complement conventional orthopedic care rather than replace it.

When should you consider acupuncture for knee pain?

If knee pain has persisted for several weeks, limits your daily activities, or keeps returning despite rest, it may be worthwhile to explore acupuncture as part of your treatment plan.

Acupuncture works well alongside medical evaluation, physical therapy, imaging studies, and orthopedic care when necessary. It is not about choosing one approach over another but selecting therapies that work together to promote healing.

At Raleigh Acupuncture Associates, we evaluate the whole person—not simply the painful joint. Our goal is to identify contributing factors, reduce inflammation, improve movement, and help you return to the activities you enjoy with greater comfort and confidence.

If knee pain is preventing you from living the life you want, acupuncture for knee pain may provide a safe, natural option worth considering. Whether your symptoms stem from arthritis, a sports injury, tendon irritation, or chronic overuse, acupuncture for knee pain can become an important part of a comprehensive recovery plan. The sooner underlying dysfunction is addressed, the sooner many patients begin moving more freely again through acupuncture for knee pain.

If you’re ready to take the next step toward healthier movement, we’d be honored to help.
