Acupuncture for Low Libido

September 17, 2026 By Mark Molinoff

Acupuncture for low libido takes a whole-person approach, looking beyond sexual function alone to factors such as stress, fatigue, sleep, hormonal changes, medications, pain, and overall health.

Low sexual desire is common, but that does not make it any less frustrating when it affects your well-being or relationship. Acupuncture for low libido takes a whole-person approach, looking beyond sexual function alone to factors such as stress, fatigue, sleep, hormonal changes, medications, pain, and overall health. Chinese medicine has long viewed sexual vitality as connected to the health of the entire body rather than as an isolated function—which, frankly, is more realistic than expecting desire to operate like a light switch.

Low libido is a persistent or recurring reduction in sexual desire that is bothersome to the person experiencing it.

Because sexual desire varies naturally between individuals and throughout life, treatment begins with understanding what has changed and what may be contributing to it.

What Causes Low Libido in Women and Men?

There is rarely one universal explanation for decreased sexual desire. Chronic stress, poor sleep, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, menopause, pregnancy, low testosterone, thyroid disorders, chronic illness, and certain medications can all contribute. Pain during intercourse or other physical discomfort can understandably reduce interest as well.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, practitioners assess broader patterns involving energy, circulation, sleep, digestion, emotional stress, and reproductive health. Rather than treating libido as an isolated symptom, acupuncture considers what else has been happening in the body.

That distinction matters. If someone is exhausted, sleeping poorly, overwhelmed at work, and experiencing hormonal changes, simply telling them to “relax” is unlikely to accomplish much. The body has already submitted its objection in writing.

Persistent or unexplained changes in libido should also be discussed with a medical provider, particularly when accompanied by other new symptoms.

How Does Acupuncture for Low Libido Work?

In Chinese medicine, the Kidneys play a central role in sexual and reproductive health. The Kidney system is understood to store Jing, or vital essence, and to support growth, aging, fertility, sexual energy, and overall vitality. When Kidney Qi, Kidney Yin, or Kidney Yang becomes depleted, a person may experience reduced libido along with symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, feeling unusually cold or warm, or reproductive changes. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine nourish and strengthen the Kidney system, with the goal of restoring balance, supporting vitality, and improving healthy sexual function.

Modern research suggests acupuncture influences the autonomic nervous system and may help with stress, anxiety, sleep, and menopause-related symptoms. Chinese medicine describes treatment somewhat differently. Patterns traditionally associated with depleted vitality, constrained Qi, or impaired circulation may be addressed according to the patient’s presentation. Different language, perhaps, but the clinical goal remains practical: understand the whole person rather than chase one symptom.

Can Stress, Hormones, and Fatigue Affect Sexual Desire?

Absolutely. Sexual desire does not exist independently of the rest of your health. Chronic stress can keep the nervous system in a heightened state, while inadequate sleep and persistent fatigue leave the body with fewer resources for anything beyond getting through Tuesday.

Hormonal transitions can also matter. Menopause may bring changes in desire, vaginal dryness, sleep, and mood, while hormonal or metabolic problems in either sex can affect sexual function. Chronic inflammation, digestive problems, and other health conditions may indirectly influence energy and well-being.

For men, low testosterone can also contribute to decreased sexual desire. Testosterone levels naturally decline with age, but unusually low levels may be associated with reduced libido, lower energy, changes in mood, decreased muscle mass, and sometimes erectile difficulties.

Three Examples of How Acupuncture May Help

Consider three representative clinical scenarios.

A 48-year-old woman noticed declining desire during perimenopause along with night sweats, poor sleep, and increased irritability. Her acupuncture treatments focused on the broader menopausal pattern rather than libido alone. As her sleep and overall well-being improved, she also reported improved libido.

A 39-year-old man described reduced sexual interest during an intensely stressful year at work. He was exhausted, tense, and sleeping five hours a night. Treatment emphasized stress reduction and sleep support. His improvement occurred gradually as his overall stress burden decreased.

A 57-year-old woman developed lower desire while dealing with chronic pain and fatigue. Acupuncture addressed her pain, muscular tension, and general energy along with boosting her Kidney function. As her pain became more manageable, intimacy no longer felt like another item on an already unreasonable to-do list.

Acupuncture for Low Libido in Raleigh, NC

If decreased sexual desire is bothering you, you do not need to feel embarrassed discussing it. Acupuncture for low libido can be incorporated into a broader approach that considers stress, sleep, pain, hormonal transitions, emotional well-being, and general health.

At Raleigh Acupuncture Associates, treatment is individualized and confidential. We will listen to what has changed, evaluate your symptoms from a Chinese medicine perspective, and determine whether acupuncture is appropriate for your situation. When another medical evaluation is warranted, we encourage that as well.

If low libido has become part of a larger pattern of stress, fatigue, poor sleep, pain, or hormonal change, schedule an appointment and let us explore whether acupuncture can play a supportive role in helping you feel healthier and more balanced.

What our Clients are Saying

For the past three years my energy has been low, stopped exercising, feeling depressed and no libido.  Went to Raleigh Acupuncture because a friend of mine lost weight there.  The doctor was very caring and motivated to make me feel better.  It’s worked great.  My energy is up, I’m walking again three times a week and amazingly my libido is back.

Anne C

Came in for low libido. Was not expecting much.  Very impressed with the results.  I feel normal again!  Thank you Raleigh Acupuncture!

Shelly A

Since my stroke two years ago, my libido disappeared.  Before the stroke it had been very healthy.  So I was more than pleasantly surprised when I got acupuncture.  I went for my knees, as they were telling me I needed a double knee replacement.  The knee pain went away, but just as good, my libido returned.
