Acupuncture for Nausea

May 21, 2026 By Mark Molinoff

Acupuncture for nausea brought on by by migraines, vertigo, pregnancy, digestive upset, or stress. Safe, effective, long-lasting results.

Nausea is one of those symptoms that can turn an ordinary day into a negotiation with gravity, crackers, and the nearest bathroom. Whether it arrives with migraines, vertigo, pregnancy, digestive upset, or stress, it has a remarkable ability to make the world feel smaller and less stable. The good news is that Acupuncture for Nausea has been studied extensively and often works surprisingly well across many different causes.

Nausea is the unpleasant sensation of needing to vomit, often caused by disturbances involving the digestive system, nervous system, inner ear, hormones, or inflammation.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, nausea is viewed as a disruption in the normal downward movement of stomach energy. In modern biomedical terms, acupuncture appears to influence the nervous system, digestion, circulation, inflammation, and neurotransmitter activity. Different language, same unhappy stomach.

How Acupuncture Helps Calm the Nervous System and Digestion

One reason acupuncture works so broadly for nausea is that nausea itself is not a disease. It is more like a fire alarm. Sometimes the problem starts in the stomach, sometimes in the brain, and sometimes in the vestibular system of the inner ear.

Acupuncture treatments are designed to regulate the communication between these systems. Research suggests acupuncture may help modulate serotonin and dopamine pathways, reduce inflammation, improve gastric motility, and calm overactive stress responses. In plain English: it helps the body stop sounding the alarm every five minutes.

Patients are often surprised that treatment points may be placed on the wrist, legs, ears, or scalp rather than directly on the abdomen. One commonly used point near the wrist, known as P6 or Neiguan, has been studied for chemotherapy nausea, post-operative nausea, motion sickness, and morning sickness.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, acupuncture also supports digestion and gut health by restoring balance when the stomach becomes “rebellious.” It is an old phrase, admittedly dramatic, but anyone who has spent the night hugging a toilet knows it is also fairly accurate.

Acupuncture for Vertigo, Migraines, and Motion-Related Nausea

Not all nausea begins in the digestive tract. Some of the most stubborn cases come from migraines, vertigo, and vestibular dysfunction. When the inner ear and nervous system disagree about where the body is in space, nausea often follows.

One patient came to our clinic after months of intermittent vertigo that made grocery store aisles feel like carnival rides. She had already tried medication, which helped somewhat but left her exhausted. After several acupuncture sessions focused on calming the vestibular system and reducing neck tension, her nausea episodes became far less frequent and less intense.

Migraine-related nausea also responds well to acupuncture. Many migraine sufferers find that the nausea is even more disabling than the head pain itself. Acupuncture can help regulate blood flow, calm nervous system hypersensitivity, and reduce inflammation associated with migraine activity.

A second patient, a college student preparing for exams, experienced migraines with severe nausea several times each month. Along with fewer migraines, she reported that the “sick-to-my-stomach feeling” improved dramatically after treatment. She was especially grateful to stop associating libraries with ginger ale and saltines.

Morning Sickness and Sensitive Stomachs Need a Gentle Approach

Pregnancy-related nausea deserves special mention because many women are understandably cautious about medications during pregnancy. Acupuncture offers a gentle, drug-free option that has been widely used for morning sickness.

Treatments during pregnancy are carefully adapted to support both mother and baby. Many patients report improvements not only in nausea, but also in sleep, stress, digestion, and overall energy.

One woman in her first trimester arrived carrying a plastic bag “just in case,” which is never the accessory anyone hopes for. She had difficulty keeping food down and felt miserable most of the day. After a series of treatments, her nausea gradually became more manageable, allowing her to eat more normally and return to work without constant fear of becoming sick.

Acupuncture may also help nausea related to stomach viruses, medication side effects, reflux, anxiety, food sensitivities, and chronic digestive disorders. Because Chinese medicine looks at patterns rather than isolated symptoms, treatment plans are individualized rather than one-size-fits-all.

Why Acupuncture for Nausea Often Works When Other Approaches Stall

Many patients seeking Acupuncture for Nausea have already tried antacids, dietary changes, motion sickness medications, or anti-nausea drugs. Sometimes those treatments help. Sometimes they help partially. And sometimes they simply replace nausea with fatigue.

Acupuncture does not force the body in one direction. Instead, it aims to restore regulation and balance within the systems already involved in digestion, immunity, circulation, and neurological function. That broader approach is part of why acupuncture can help such a wide variety of nausea presentations.

Importantly, persistent or severe nausea should always be medically evaluated, especially when accompanied by dehydration, weight loss, fever, neurological symptoms, or severe abdominal pain. Acupuncture works best as part of thoughtful, evidence-informed care rather than as a substitute for appropriate medical evaluation.

If nausea has been disrupting your work, sleep, travel, pregnancy, or quality of life, acupuncture may offer meaningful relief without adding more stress to an already overwhelmed system.

At Raleigh Acupuncture Associates, we regularly use Acupuncture for Nausea as part of an individualized treatment plan designed around the specific cause of your symptoms. And while we cannot promise you will suddenly enjoy amusement park rides or gas station sushi, we can say that many patients are pleasantly surprised by how quickly their bodies begin to settle.

What our Clients are Saying

I can’t express enough gratitude for the positive impact acupuncture has had on my life. For years, I struggled with debilitating gastroparesis symptoms that left me feeling trapped in a cycle of pain and discomfort. Traditional medical treatments provided limited relief, leaving me searching for alternative therapies. That’s when I discovered Raleigh Acupuncture. From my first session, I felt a significant relief. As I continued regular acupuncture sessions, I noticed a remarkable improvement in my gastroparesis symptoms. The chronic nausea, bloating, and stomach pain that once plagued me began to reduce, allowing me to reclaim control over my body and my life. Acupuncture not only provided relief from my symptoms but also helped me feel more balanced and relaxed. I had more energy and focus. Today, thanks to Raleigh Acupuncture, my life is fuller and more vibrant and my gastroparesis is completely manageable. I strongly recommend acupuncture to anyone struggling with similar challenges. It truly is a holistic healing medicine.

My first pregnancy went so easy.  So I was surprised when I got so nauseous with my second one.  Every smell made me sick and I didn’t want to eat anything.  My mom found Raleigh Acupuncture.  The practitioner told me it generally took 3 to 6 treatments to stop the nausea.  She was right.  After 6 treatments I wasn’t nauseous anymore and could eat again without trouble.  I’m very pleased and would recommend them to any pregnant woman suffering from nausea.

Kimberly M

When I was pregnant 6 weeks I got terrible nausea and vomiting.  I could not hold anything down.  I started losing weight after two weeks and my doctor put me on medications.  But I was still vomiting every day and felt awful.  I found Raleigh Acupuncture and they treated me three times.  It totally stopped the nausea and vomiting.  I stopped my medications, and the rest of my pregnancy had no problems.  They said this was an easy thing to treat.  I wish I had known about it from the beginning of my pregnancy.

Clarissa T

I came back from a trip to the Caribbean with a terrible case of vertigo and nausea.  I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t work, couldn’t walk straight.  I had this throbbing headache all day long.  It was driving me crazy.  I tried acupuncture and in three sessions was completely cured!  I was so impressed that I had them treat my back pain next.  I only wish insurance covered the treatments.
