Spring is in the air! Our only snow has fallen (we hope), the grass is greening up, trees are starting to flower, and spring rains are abundant. It’s time to shake the cobwebs off and prepare for Spring – rejuvenation, increased spirit, new hopes, and dreams. An acupuncture spring tune-up gets the qi and blood moving, preparing your mind and body to embrace new beginnings.
The Seasons and Chinese Medicine
For thousands of years, acupuncturists have helped people stay healthy. That means developing an awareness of how the seasons affect our health and daily living. Each season brings opportunities and challenges. Being prepared is the best medicine for maximizing the opportunity for success.
What You Need To Know About Spring
As mentioned above, Spring is a time of renewal. The harsh, cold winter fades, bringing life and renewal. It is good to rest well at night and rise early. Take long walks in the sunshine. There is no better time to walk in nature than now. Regarding others, be generous and agreeable. Do not get caught up in a sense of urgency. There will be time to accomplish all that needs to be done. By being compassionate, we honor the arrival of Spring in all its majesty. To receive this new life, we must support and encourage the life around us (including people), even when we don’t feel like it.
The season of Spring is represented by the liver organ. Its nature is wood, and its flavor is sour (in Chinese medicine all seasons have their taste) This means we should eat less sour foods in Spring and eat mildly sweet foods, which nourishes our spleen qi. The liver and spleen must be in balance for good health, especially in the Spring. (The acupuncture spring tune-up helps restore this balance.)
Be Aware For Trouble
With new life and growth, there is also the potential for trouble. Spring can kindles diseases that have been hiding beneath the surface. The weather right now (between February and April) is erratic, transitioning between cold and warm. People with chronic health conditions, especially seniors, may feel more tired in Spring as the qi of Spring arrives. These chronic conditions may flare up in Spring.
Also, we have just spent months being cooped up inside, with dry heat, less activity, and artificial lighting. These unnatural conditions build up in winter and start to release in Spring. As such, it is common for our bodies in Spring to feel hot, our heads dizzy, our breathing short and our limbs (arms and legs), and low back weak. But take heart, Spring clears out the old and brings in new strength. All season changes involve transition, and these are just some of the changes we may experience.
Acupuncture Spring Tune Up
If you have not had acupuncture for a while, now is a good time for treatment. It gently gets your qi moving, which in turn circulates your blood. Good blood circulation is essential for good health. Acupuncture helps revitalize your mind, body, and spirit to welcome in the Spring.

Spring is a season of vibrancy and harmony. It is the perfect time to walk on greenway trails, hike through forests, and stroll off-season beaches, taking in the abundance and beauty of nature. Spring is a time to open our hearts, cast off stagnant energy, and encourage life and renewal. It is important to avoid dwelling on things we cannot change, past disappointments, or future worries.
Those of us older than 50 should try not to overeat, especially on an empty stomach. And don’t put away your winter clothes just yet. Ease into your spring wardrobe. It’s windy in Spring, and the wind brings 10,000 diseases. Take a windbreaker with you on walks. Decrease layer by layer- don’t get rid of everything all at once!
