Early Treatment Is Critical
Bell’s Palsy is a challenging condition because, for many people, it leaves their face paralyzed for life. Acupuncture is one of the few treatments available that resolves this condition. The patient should start acupuncture treatment as soon as possible for best results – ideally within the first few weeks.
Although we have had exceptions, it is more difficult to achieve full recovery the more time passes. One recent exception involved a woman who got Bell’s Palsy seven years prior, leaving her with some paralysis on the left side of her face. Acupuncture was able to resolve her condition by 80 percent. Ideally, patients start treatment within the first few weeks or months of onset.
How It Works
There is a simple, unique reason why acupuncture resolves facial paralysis. Western medicine has no cure for this condition. If you go to the doctor with Bell’s Palsy, they will give you an anti-viral and corticosteroid, then tell you to go home and rest. That’s the full extent of their treatment. After that, you will either recover or not – on your own.
When you come in for the Raleigh Acupuncture Bell’s Palsy treatment, we take a much more active approach to your care. You receive acupuncture once a week for the first four weeks, during which time we expect you to start responding to treatment. If you do, which happens in 90 percent of the cases, we continue to treat you weekly until you are better. If you don’t respond to treatment after four sessions, we will suggest other treatment options.
What Causes Bell’s Palsy?
Chinese medicine theory holds that external wind can get trapped in the body, bringing disease. For example, Bell’s Palsy can result from sleeping near an open window where the wind blows on your face all night. In most cases of Bell’s, patients were exposed to the wind on their faces for a prolonged period the day before the incident occurred. And wind lodged in the body is the primary cause of paralysis.
