A 58 year old woman came to our office complaining of chronic wrist and hand pain in both hands. The pain had been troubling her for the past 3 years. She had tried a number of treatments without success. This carpal tunnel acupuncture case study reviews her treatment and how we were able to resolve her pain.
The Problem
Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused when the median nerve in the wrist (palm side) is compressed, often from repetitive activity. Symptoms include pain, numbness and tingling in the first three fingers of the hand (thumb, pointer, middle). Patients often wake up at night with their hands asleep and throbbing.
8 million Americans get carpal tunnel syndrome each year. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 230,000 carpal tunnel surgeries are performed each year. The U.S. Department of Labor concluded that carpal tunnel syndrome is major occupational hazard, disabling workers in epidemic proportions. According to NIOSHA, only 23% of all carpal tunnel syndrome patients were able to return to their previous professions following surgery.
Carpal Tunnel Acupuncture Case Study
Our patient developed carpal tunnel using weights at the gym. Repetitive use of hand weights were the culprit. But even though she stopped using the weights, the pain continued. All three fingers were affected, and the pain woke her up during the night. She did not want surgery, but felt more and more resigned to needing it.
We examined her and took a full history of the condition. Her treatment consisted of using sterile, single-use, hair thin needles to open blocked channels in her arms and hands. Primary points included PC3, PC6, PC7 and PC8. Electroacupuncture was used, as this typically brings faster results.
While initially she was nervous about the needles, one treatment showed her how relaxing and easy the treatment was. After that, she looked forward to her treatments.
After the first treatment our patient felt 20% relief from her arm and hand pain Following the fourth treatment she was 50% better. Another three treatments resolved the remaining pain. That was over 10 years ago. She still comes to see us for various pain conditions, but the carpal pain never returned.

What our Clients are Saying
I’m a massage therapist and never had a problem with wrist or hand pain until last year. My whole hand (right worse than left) starting throbbing and going numb with searing pain through the wrist, thumb and pointer finger. It was waking me several nights a week and interfering with my work. I started getting treated at Raleigh Acupuncture. It has dramatically reduced my pain, to the point where I can work and am not waking up at night. I think the nature of my work puts alot of strain on my wrists, but I’m not ready to give up my profession. I’ll need regular acupuncture for this, but I don’t mind. It’s the only thing that’s helped.
I’m a computer programmer and have been sitting at a desk working a mouse for years. It finally caught up with me a few months ago. I developed a terrible pain in my wrist that made my whole hand go numb, especially at night. The acupuncturist said the condition was easy to treat. My friend had surgery for the same thing. I figured I might as well try a few treatments. That’s all it took. The pain went away and hasn’t returned. Thank you Raleigh Acupuncture!
Raleigh Acupuncture cured my carpal tunnel syndrome for good! This has been plaguing me for years, waking me at night. My hands would go numb and shooting pains would go up my arms. I was nervous about the treatments beforehand, but they babied me! It wasn’t bad at all. Anyway, the pain is gone, gone, gone! I’m hooked on acupuncture now.
