A 46 year old woman came to our clinic after finishing her chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. Her main complaint was debilitating fatigue. This chemo side effects case study examines how acupuncture helped restore her energy and vibrancy.
The Problem
Chemotherapy saves lives. Unfortunately, it comes with a host of side effects, including fatigue, nausea, neuropathy, loss of appetite and constipation, to name just a few. Acupuncture is effective at resolving many of these conditions. This chemo side effects case study examines one of these side effects, exhaustion. We have successfully treated all of the conditions listed above.
The Solution
Our patient was diagnosed with breast cancer six months earlier. She had undergone surgery and chemotherapy, and was currently receiving radiation treatment. The surgery was successful and so was the chemotherapy. Her doctors were pleased with her treatment and her prognosis was excellent.
Unfortunately the chemotherapy had left her feeling exhausted. She felt sluggish and could not rally enough energy to get through the day. A friend suggested she try acupuncture.
Chemo Side Effects Case Study
Her Chinese medicine diagnosis for the exhaustion she was feeling was called Spleen Qi Deficiency. The chemo had damaged her body’s ability to digest foods properly, so she was not getting the nutrients she needed for strength.
Her treatment focused on strengthening her metabolism and digestion. We used acupuncture points including: ST36, SP3, CV12, CV6, ST21, BL20 and BL23. These points all strengthen Spleen Qi, which is the root of the digestive system.
After four treatments (once a week) our patient was feeling 50% more energy. After another six treatments her energy was back to normal. During the course of her treatments we also helped with the side effects associated with the radiation she was receiving.
A follow up six months later revealed that our patient was doing great, with plenty of energy.
What To Expect
