A 34 year old man came to our office having been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease 12 months earlier. He was struggling with constant lower abdominal bloating and pain, fatigue, food sensitivity and bowel irregularity. His doctors wanted him to start taking medications for the Crohn’s, but he was resisting. This Crohn’s disease case study discusses how acupuncture eased his symptoms and allowed him to avoid taking strong medications.
The Problem
Crohn’s is a chronic bowel condition causing inflammation in the digestive tract. It is commonly found at the small intestine where it joins the large intestine. 700,000 Americans currently have Crohn’s. There is no cure for the condition. Our patient started responding to his treatment right away. After the first three treatments his symptoms were noticeably reduced. His lower abdominal swelling and pain were 70% less, while fatigue and bowel function were 30% better. After seven treatments his overall condition was 80% better. He was also able to eat more varieties of foods without triggering bloating and pain.
Some of the acupuncture points used in the treatments included LV3, Li4, Li11, CV4, BL25, BL18, GV20 and Yintang.
After his initial 7 treatments he came in for monthly maintenance. In this way he was able to manage his condition and avoid starting the medications that his doctor had offered him.

Crohn’s is an inflammatory bowel disease. Acupuncture reduces inflammation. That’s why it works so well at calming Crohn’s symptoms. It is not a cure. There is no cure yet. When a Crohn’s patient comes to our office, we typically treat them once a week for 4 weeks. At that point we evaluate their progress and see if they are responding. If so, we continue.
