A 63 year old woman came to our office struggling with eczema on her legs. She had patches of red, dry, itchy skin all over her upper and lower legs. She had tried many treatments over the years, providing only temporary relief. This eczema acupuncture case study describes how we resolved her eczema.
The Problem
Eczema is a non-life threatening skin condition that causes itching, irritation and pain. There is no Western medical cure for eczema. The most common treatment is the topical application of cortico-steroid creams, which can provide temporary relief. The condition is often aggravated by stress. It is estimated that up to 35 million Americas have eczema.
The Solution
Acupuncture provides natural relief for eczema patients. While Western treatment addresses the symptom (the skin), acupuncture addresses both the symptom and the underlying root issue (the body). Chinese medicine recognizes that skin conditions are affected by internal conditions that generate heat at the skin level.
In this eczema acupuncture case study, our patient was treated at the skin level AND at the organ level. This dual approach allowed for deeper healing than what she had experienced with topical creams.
Eczema Acupuncture Case Study
Our patient’s leg eczema was red, painful and itchy. These are all signs of heat in the skin level. Her treatment consisted of acupuncture points used to disperse heat both on the skin and in her body.
The skin points consisted of using tiny, sterile, single-use needles at the site of the skin irritation. We have developed a technique in this local treatment that works extremely well to increase blood circulation to the damaged skin, allowing the skin to heal quickly and deeply.
Other acupuncture points were used to clear heat from the body internally, as well as to reduce stress from the body. We are affected by stress every day. When stress impacts us, we typically internalize it, and it quickly lodges in our bodies.
Some people hold stress in their neck and shoulders, others in their lower back, still others in their stomach and intestines (IBS). Stress impacted our patient by generating heat in her body, which sought release through the skin. This manifested as eczema.
Results
Our patient in this eczema acupuncture case study responded beautifully to her treatment. Within six treatments her eczema had completely resolved. To maintain these results she continued to come for monthly tune-ups, where we used acupuncture to keep her body in balance, keep stress low, and avoid heat build-up. She no longer needed to use topical medications. Her skin was clear and healthy.

What our Clients are Saying
I developed eczema as a child and have managed the condition for years with steroid creams. Recently my stress level went up from a work situation, and the itching became intolerable. The creams didn’t help and I was desperate. Research online led me to Raleigh Acupuncture. They treated the itching by reducing my eczema. It worked better than the cream ever did. I wish I had done this 15 years ago, as my skin and itching is 90% better.
I’ve had eczema all my adult life and had resigned myself to managing it with steroid creams. I would have done this forever had my father-in-law not suggested that acupuncture could help. I was quite skeptical, knowing how stubborn this skin condition was. I have seen close to a dozen dermatologists over the years, and none of them have ever been able to do anything more than prescribe steroids. Over the counter creams never worked for me.
Pardon the long introduction, but I wanted you to know my situation. That’s why I was surprised and more than pleased to see my eczema improve substantially after receiving acupuncture treatment. After two treatments my then current flare settled down. With continued treatment my chronic patches started to recede. Itching was substantially reduced as well. I now receive what they call maintenance treatment for my eczema, which I will happily do each month.
I researched all of the top acupuncture practices in Raleigh before selecting Raleigh Acupuncture. The doctors there were thoughtful, knowledgeable, and well versed in treating eczema. They delivered on what they promised, to control and substantially resolve my eczema. I highly recommend them.
