A 27 year old woman came to our office complaining of painful periods. She had been diagnosed with endometriosis by her gynecologist earlier in the year. This endometriosis acupuncture case study describes how we were able to help relieve her painful periods.
The Problem
Endometriosis is very common. It affects an estimated 1 in 10 women during their reproductive years (ages 15 to 49), which is about 176 million women worldwide. According to studies in the New England Journal of Medicine, endometriosis is one of the top three causes of female infertility. While it is one of the most treatable, it remains the least treated.
The Solution
Several years ago the World Health Organization (WHO) published an official report listing 31 symptoms, conditions and diseases that have been shown in controlled trials to be treated effectively by Acupuncture. Endometriosis is one of these conditions.
We have been successfully resolving painful periods associated with endometriosis for 15 years. The treatment is natural, safe and delivers long lasting results.
Endometriosis Acupuncture Case Study
In this case study, our patient had been struggling with painful periods for years. They began during her teens and she was put on birth control pills. This helped ease her symptoms, but she was not pain free.
Then, in her twenties she got married and wanted to start a family. She stopped birth control pills and her periods became very painful. She also had trouble conceiving. Upon examination her doctor diagnosed her with endometriosis.
Treatment
Our patient’s Chinese medicine diagnosis in this endometriosis acupuncture case study was Liver Blood Stasis. This is an imbalance that causes poor blood circulation during menstruation. Her symptoms included painful periods (sharp, stabbing abdominal pain), large clots, and maroon colored blood (as opposed to bright red).
Acupuncture was used to improve her blood circulation during menstruation. Points included, but were not limited to, SP10, LV3, SP6, CV2, SP13, BL17, BL18 and BL32. Treatments were given once a week. In addition herbal formulas were prescribed to address the Liver blood stagnation. The formula she took during her periods was called Tao Hong Si Wu.
After four treatments she began seeing positive changes in her menstrual period. There was noticeably less pain, smaller clots and lighter color blood. An additional four treatments continued improvements in her cycle. When she completed 12 treatments (3 months) her cycle was 80% improved.
At this point her treatments dropped to bi-monthly. After another 3 months she was pregnant!
Conclusion
This endometriosis acupuncture cases study presents fairly typical outcomes. Liver blood stasis is quite treatable and responds well to acupuncture and Chinese herbs. In our patient’s case, a resolution of her endometriosis resulted in her getting pregnant. For others, the goal is simply to have normal periods without pain.

What our Clients are Saying
I never had painful periods until I moved and started a new job. Very high stress. Every month I started getting migraine headaches and severe cramping. A friend suggested Raleigh Acupuncture and I got treated. It helped three things – reduced my stress, stopped the migraines and totally stopped the painful periods. They were all related and all triggered by my job stress. It was fascinating learning more about my body and how things like work really do take a toll. I’m trying to lead a more balanced life now. I’m continuing acupuncture until I get a less stressful job.
Periods are supposed to be painful, right? Guess what? THIS IS NOT TRUE! Why didn’t I know about acupuncture ten years ago? Do yourself a favor. Check these people out. Don’t be freaked out by the needles. They don’t even hurt. You don’t have to put up with pain every month!!
I suffered from painful periods my entire adult life. They started me on birth control pills as a teenager, and that helped until my mid-twenties. Then they got painful again, like ten out of ten pain with terrible cramping. Luckily my job is flexible, because I would miss two days each month from the pain. I found Raleigh Acupuncture on the internet and liked their website. During the initial visit they explained why my periods were so painful and how Chinese medicine addressed it. It made a lot of sense to me so I tried it. They told me it would take three cycles to regulate my period, but honestly I starting feeling better within a few weeks. I can honestly say that now my periods are not painful at all and my period is “normal”. I am so relieved and grateful. If you have painful periods you need to try acupuncture.
