A 47 year old woman came to our office with severe hamstring pain. She was a competitive runner, racing 5K and 10K events twelve times a year. This hamstring pain acupuncture case study describes how acupuncture resolved her pain and allowed her to return to racing better than ever.
The Problem
A 2017 study stated, “Hamstring injuries are one of the most common injuries in athletes. Injuries can range from acute hamstring muscle strains and ruptures to chronic proximal hamstring tendinopathy. Acute hamstring strains are the most common muscle strain, have high rates of recurrence and can lead to prolonged absence from sports. Studies investigating corticosteroid and platelet-rich plasma injections have mixed results.”*
Acupuncture Resolves Hamstring Pain Best
At Raleigh Acupuncture, we have been treating and resolving hamstring pain for over 15 years. It’s a straightforward condition to treat, yielding excellent results. Acupuncture promotes healing in the body. The sterile, single-use, hair thin needles encourage qi and blood circulation, promoting dramatic restorative healing in damaged muscles, tendons and fascia.
Hamstring Pain Acupuncture Case Study
In this case study, a 47 year old competitive runner had been struggling with hamstring pain for over 6 months. The pain was severe, keeping her from racing. Her workouts had been severely curtailed due to the pain. Cortisone injections brought only temporary relief, and physical therapy had made little improvement to her condition.
Patient Symptoms
Her pain was localized in the upper leg, and did not radiate upward into the hips. However, pain and tightness did radiate downward into her lower leg and calf. The pain was worse during and after running, and better when she rested. However, even when she did not run at all she still had daily pain in the hamstring muscles. In addition, leg cramping acted up during the night, disturbing her sleep.
Treatment Protocol
The acupuncture points used in her treatments included: BL36, BL37, BL40, BL57, and Ashi (tender) points in the hamstring muscle. Most importantly, a specific needling protocol was used which is highly effective for resolving hamstring pain and restoring muscle function in the upper leg. Electroacupuncture was applied to enhance the effects of the treatment.
Results
Pain was reduced 30% following the first treatment. After four consecutive treatments her pain was 70% resolved. At this point she started light training again. Six treatments later she was 100% better, back on her racing schedule, pain free. She continued to come for maintenance treatments once a month for the next year, assuring that she did not re-injure her hamstring muscles. No injuries recurred.

What our Clients are Saying
I came to Raleigh Acupuncture for severe plantar fasciitis and hamstring pain. They helped me with both of them. My pain was a 10 out of 10 beforehand, and now I’m barely a 1 out of 10. The process is amazing. I don’t know how it works but I KNOW it works!
