“Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” is a traditional children’s song based on the 1883 ballad “There Is a Tavern in the Town.” Children tap each body part as they sing the playful song. Today’s blog post gets inspiration from this song to describe how acupuncture treats these four essential parts of the body.
It’s All In Your Head
Acupuncture treats many conditions that affect the head, including migraines, tension headaches, vertigo, tinnitus, dry eyes, blurry vision, jaw and TMJ pain, Bell’s Palsy, trigeminal neuralgia, foggy brain, poor concentration, depression, anxiety, and stress.
Each condition requires a different treatment, and each patient’s unique presentation means their remedy is custom-made for them. For example, an imbalance called Liver Yang Rising is typically responsible for one-sided migraines (hemiplegic). Effective treatment requires acupuncture points like LV3, KD6, and LI4. Frontal headaches are most often due to Spleen/Stomach Qi deficiency, best treated with acupoints ST41, ST36, CV12, and GV14.

A Weight Off Your Shouders
At Raleigh Acupuncture, we tackle all types of shoulder issues, from rotator cuff injuries to tight rhomboids, deltoid strains to frozen shoulder. The shoulder joint is flexible and agile, enabling our arms to perform extensive movements. As a result, it’s easy to develop shoulder pain and equally easy to get stuck with a nagging shoulder issue.
One of the most common conditions we treat is tight shoulders from stress and computer work. The trapezius sits on top of your shoulders, the place everyone loves to get rubbed. The acupuncture point GB21 is excellent at releasing chronically tight shoulders.

Knee Deep In Pain
Athletes know all about knee pain from an early age. The rest of us learn about it as we get older. But, no matter the issue, acupuncture can often ease or resolve stubborn knee pain. We treat tendonitis, osteoarthritis on the knees, swelling knees, and pain underneath the kneecap.
When going through a growth spurt, teens sometimes develop a knee condition called Osgood-Schlatter disease. It’s a pain just below the knee. Acupuncture resolves this pain quickly and efficiently. Likewise, we’ve helped many patients hold off knee replacement surgery simply by keeping their knee pain in check. Acupuncture can’t reverse arthritis, but it effectively relieves the pain.

Stay On Your Toes
For such tiny appendages, toes pack a big punch when it comes to pain. Anyone who has dealt with toe pain knows it interferes with every aspect of life. You can’t take a step without being reminded of the problem. Football players lose entire seasons to turf toe!
Acupuncture works like a charm resolving toe pain. We also have a highly effective treatment for peripheral neuropathy (numb, burning pain in the feet and toes). Our unique protocol works better than medications to provide long-lasting relief from neuropathy. The acupoints quiet the agitated nerves in the feet responsible for the pain. Acupuncture works to heal nerve damage all over the body. We have good results treating nerve conditions like shingles, post-herpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, and sciatica.
