Hives Treatment with Acupuncture

October 20, 2026 By Mark Molinoff

The hives treatment with acupuncture calms inflammation, regulates immune activity, and helps the body restore balance.

Hives can appear seemingly out of nowhere. One minute your skin is perfectly normal; the next, you’re covered in raised, itchy welts that seem determined to make you miserable. For some people, hives disappear within hours. For others, they return repeatedly, sometimes for months or even years. The hives treatment with acupuncture offers a natural, individualized approach to calming inflammation, regulating immune activity, and helping the body restore its balance.

Hives, medically known as urticaria, are raised, itchy patches or welts caused by the release of histamine and other inflammatory chemicals in the skin. Although hives are often associated with allergies, many cases have no identifiable trigger. Fortunately, Chinese medicine offers a different way of understanding and treating this frustrating condition.

What Causes Hives and Why Do They Keep Coming Back?

Hives develop when specialized immune cells called mast cells release histamine, causing small blood vessels to leak fluid into surrounding tissues. The result is redness, swelling, and itching.

Common triggers include foods, medications, infections, temperature changes, pressure on the skin, and emotional stress. However, chronic spontaneous urticaria often occurs without an obvious external cause.

When hives persist or recur for more than six weeks, they are classified as chronic urticaria. In some patients, autoimmune processes contribute to inappropriate mast cell activation.

This explains why avoiding suspected allergens doesn’t always solve the problem. Sometimes the immune system itself is generating the reaction.

Stress can also aggravate hives. The nervous and immune systems communicate constantly, and heightened stress responses can intensify itching and inflammation.

The skin, apparently, has its own way of expressing dissatisfaction.

How Acupuncture Helps Relieve Hives

The hives treatment with acupuncture focuses on calming the body’s exaggerated inflammatory response while addressing factors that may contribute to recurring outbreaks.

Acupuncture influences communication between the nervous and immune systems. Research has shown that acupuncture helps regulate inflammatory signaling, influence immune activity, and reduce itching.

In clinical practice, we focus on several therapeutic goals:

  • Reducing itching: Calming the nervous system helps decrease the intensity of itching and the urge to scratch.
  • Regulating immune activity: Acupuncture helps moderate excessive inflammatory responses associated with recurrent hives.
  • Reducing stress: Improving nervous system regulation can be especially helpful when emotional stress contributes to flare-ups.
  • Supporting digestion: Chinese medicine considers digestive health an important component of overall immune balance.
  • Improving sleep: Reducing discomfort and promoting relaxation can help patients whose itching disrupts their rest.

How Chinese Medicine Understands Chronic Hives

Traditional Chinese medicine approaches hives somewhat differently from conventional dermatology. Rather than viewing the skin eruption as an isolated problem, Chinese medicine examines patterns involving inflammation, digestion, circulation, and the body’s response to environmental and emotional stress.

One common diagnosis is Wind-Heat, associated with sudden outbreaks of red, intensely itchy welts. Another is Wind-Cold, in which symptoms may worsen with cold exposure. Patients with persistent hives may also exhibit patterns involving digestive weakness, blood deficiency, or internal heat.

These descriptions are traditional diagnostic frameworks, not literal explanations of immune chemistry. They help practitioners individualize treatment based on the patient’s overall presentation. The hives treatment with acupuncture therefore involves more than selecting points near the affected skin. Treatment may include points on the arms, legs, abdomen, and back to address the underlying pattern.

The goal is to reduce both the immediate symptoms and the tendency toward recurring outbreaks.

Three Clinical Examples of the Hives Treatment with Acupuncture

The following illustrative cases demonstrate how acupuncture treatment may be individualized for patients with different presentations.

Case 1: Stress-Related Chronic Hives

A 42-year-old woman experienced recurring hives during a particularly demanding period at work. Her outbreaks intensified in the evenings and frequently disrupted her sleep. Treatment focused on calming her nervous system, reducing itching, and improving sleep quality. Over several weeks, her symptoms became less frequent and less intense.

Case 2: Hives Following an Illness

A 35-year-old man developed persistent hives after recovering from a respiratory infection. Although the infection had resolved, his skin continued reacting unpredictably. Acupuncture focused on supporting immune regulation and reducing inflammation. His itching gradually diminished, and the outbreaks became less troublesome.

Case 3: Chronic Hives With Digestive Complaints

A 58-year-old woman experienced intermittent hives accompanied by bloating and irregular digestion. Her treatment incorporated acupuncture points traditionally used to support digestive function while addressing itching and skin inflammation. Over time, both her digestive discomfort and skin symptoms improved.

These examples illustrate individualized treatment approaches rather than guaranteed outcomes.

How Many Acupuncture Treatments Are Needed for Hives?

Treatment frequency depends on how long the hives have been present, their severity, and the patient’s overall health.

For chronic hives, we generally recommend beginning with regular weekly treatments and evaluating progress over several visits. Some patients notice improvements relatively quickly, while others require a longer course of care.

We also encourage patients to continue working with their physicians, particularly when prescription antihistamines or other treatments are necessary. Hives accompanied by difficulty breathing, throat swelling, or faintness require immediate emergency medical attention.

What our Clients are Saying

My whole life I broke out in hives when I exercised. It was always the areas where I sweat. It would last the day and then clear up. Obviously something I could live with. But still a bother. My wife gave me an acupuncture treatment for my birthday (to relax) at Raleigh Acupuncture Associates. They asked if I had any issues and I just mentioned about the hives. They treated for that plus stress. I was really surprised the next time I ran because I didn’t break out as much. So I went back for some more sessions. After six appointments the rashes didn’t come up anymore. I don’t know what exactly they did, but it worked. I highly recommend them.

After I gave birth to my son I developed hives. They were triggered by stress. Medications didn’t help. I felt like I was losing my mind. The hives caused more stress, and the condition was getting worse and worse. I did some research on the internet and found Raleigh Acupuncture. After just three treatments my hives were 50% better. I continued treatment for a few months until they were 100% cured. It’s been six months since my last treatment and still no hives, even when I’m stressed. I’m very grateful to Raleigh Acupuncture. My whole family goes to them now because they are such good health care providers.
