Is Your Qi Stuck?

December 4, 2025 By Mark Molinoff

Is your Qi stuck? The Link Between Emotional Trauma and Physical Pain

The Link Between Emotional Trauma and Physical Pain

“Is Your Qi stuck?” is a question acupuncturists ask more often than we ask about exercise habits, caffeine intake, or whether you’ve been sleeping on a mattress last purchased during the Carter administration. And for good reason: emotional experiences—especially the unresolved, unprocessed, or politely-swept-under-the-rug kind—tend to lodge themselves in the body. Sometimes this shows up as neck tension, sometimes digestive issues, and sometimes a mysterious pain you’ve named “Stan,” because at least that way you can yell at it.

In Chinese medicine, emotions don’t “float” around as abstract concepts. They land—somewhere—creating traffic jams in your meridians. Think of it as psychological rush hour, but with fewer horns and more back pain.

When Emotions Don’t Pass Through… They Set Up Camp

You don’t need a trauma textbook to know that the body remembers what the mind tries to forget. Grief tightens the chest, anger knots the shoulders, worry disrupts digestion, and fear… well, fear tends to vibrate through the kidneys like someone dropped a tuning fork into your spine.

When the body can’t complete an emotional cycle, the Qi that should flow smoothly begins to pool, stagnate, or run in confused circles like a toddler who skipped naptime. “Is Your Qi stuck” becomes less a philosophical inquiry and more a practical diagnosis.

The result? Muscle tension that never resolves, headaches that arrive like uninvited guests, and fatigue that feels suspiciously like someone accidentally unplugged you from the wall.

Below are three real-world case studies (names and details changed, of course—HIPAA insists, and we agree).

Case Study #1: The Shoulder That Carried Too Much

Laura, age 42, came in with a shoulder so tight I wondered if she’d replaced her deltoid with a small granite countertop. She had tried massage, stretching, hot yoga, cold yoga, and one of those percussion guns that sounds like a helicopter trying to take off.

Nothing helped.

Twenty minutes into her intake she casually mentioned, “Oh, my mom passed away last year. I never cried—I was just too busy handling everything.”

Ah. There it was.

In TCM, unexpressed grief constricts the Lung channel, which runs directly through—you guessed it—the shoulder. A few treatments later, her pain eased… conveniently timed with the first good cry she’d allowed herself in 14 months. Emotional release: 1. Shoulder-of-stone: 0.

Case Study #2: The Stomach That Refused To Negotiate

Daniel, 35, came in for chronic stomach pain. His diet was admirable—vegetables, lean proteins, and only the occasional late-night bag of tortilla chips—yet his digestion behaved like a moody teenager.

During consultation, he mentioned he had recently been promoted… and also recently been terrified. “It’s a great opportunity,” he said, while wringing his hands like he was trying to start a tiny fire. “I just feel like a fraud.”

In Chinese medicine, worry and overthinking weaken the Spleen, the organ responsible for digestion and transforming food into usable energy. In other words: anxiety can literally make it harder to stomach your own success.

With acupuncture, herbal support, and a firm ban on catastrophizing after 8 p.m., things improved. His stomach forgave him. His promotion did not destroy him. Everyone was relieved.

Case Study #3: The Back Pain That Was Actually Rage in Disguise

Maria, 57, had low back pain so intense she walked like someone who had recently been kicked by a small but determined mule. MRIs showed nothing. Physical therapy helped a little—but never for long.

During treatment she mentioned her divorce. “It’s fine,” she insisted with a cheerful smile that was, frankly, suspicious. As we talked, it became clear she was carrying anger the way some people carry extra cash—tucked just out of sight, but definitely present.

In TCM, suppressed anger disrupts the Liver channel, which can tighten the low back and hips. Once she acknowledged the emotional load she’d been hauling, her muscles began to soften. Her back improved. She also took up Zumba, which seemed to help the Liver Qi move happily along.

  • Was it the acupuncture? Yes.
  • Was it the emotional honesty? Also yes.
  • Was it the Zumba? Undoubtedly—those hips had opinions.

So… Is Your Qi Stuck?

If you’re wondering, “Is Your Qi stuck” the answer might be yes if:

  • Your neck feels permanently fused to your ear.
  • Your digestion complains more than you do.
  • Your back pain flares every time someone mentions your ex-boss, ex-spouse, or current political climate.

And here’s the good news: stuck Qi can be gently persuaded to move again. Acupuncture, herbs, breathwork, lifestyle tweaks, and the occasional therapeutic cry can work wonders.

The body wants to heal. Sometimes it simply needs a nudge, a needle, and someone to say, “Yes, that emotional thing you tried to ignore? It counts.”

What our Clients are Saying

I was feeling depressed and stressed because I didn’t like my job and didn’t know what to do with my life.  I started taking Lexipro but it really affected my libido so I stopped taking it.  I tried acupuncture because my husband said it helped him when he was depressed years earlier (before he met me!)  I went to Raleigh Acupuncture and started treatments.  They were really knowledgeable about Chinese medicine and explained how the body gets stuck in depression, and how the acupuncture gets the body unstuck.  They really listened to me and helped me figure stuff out.  I started feeling less depressed.  Then I actually started getting more clear about what I wanted to do with my life career-wise.  I decided to go back to school and now I’m almost done with my degree.  I haven’t felt depressed at all since I was treated and I’m really excited about my life.  I’m very grateful to them for being such great healers and such a great support to me when I really needed it.

Thank you for your gentle healing spirit. May God bless you as you help others in the healing methods of acupuncture.. My sessions for stress relief were very helpful. In gratitude.

Susie W

I just started acupuncture and I can really see the benefits. I’ve done massages and all the Western style treatments but this is amazing! It relaxes me in ways I didn’t know could happen and I feel immediate results. I would recommend acupuncture as a treatment. The doctor was great in my initial meeting more thorough than my regular doctor. Highly recommend this!
