What Is Bursitis?

Bursitis is an inflammation of the bursae, which are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bones, tendons, and muscles near the joints. The condition most commonly affects the following parts of the body:

Shoulders: The subacromial bursa in the shoulder is frequently affected, leading to pain and stiffness, particularly when lifting the arm overhead.

Elbows: Olecranon bursitis, or inflammation of the bursa at the tip of the elbow, can cause noticeable swelling and discomfort, especially when resting the elbow on a hard surface.

Hips: Trochanteric bursitis affects the bursa over the outside of the hip, causing pain in the outer thigh and hip, particularly when lying on the affected side or climbing stairs.

Knees: Prepatellar bursitis involves inflammation of the bursa in front of the kneecap. It can result from prolonged kneeling or direct trauma to the knee.

Heels: Retrocalcaneal bursitis affects the bursa located at the back of the heel near the Achilles tendon, leading to pain and swelling, especially when walking or wearing tight shoes.

These areas are most commonly affected due to the repetitive movements or pressures that they endure, which can irritate the bursae and lead to inflammation. Managing bursitis typically involves rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medications, but severe cases may require more advanced treatments like physical therapy or injections.

How It Works

Extensive research has demonstrated that acupuncture is highly effective in easing inflammation of the bursae, which can provide long-lasting pain relief for individuals suffering from bursitis. This is primarily achieved through its ability to promote the circulation of Qi (vital energy) and blood, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain.

When acupuncture needles are inserted into specific points on the body, they stimulate the nervous system, leading to the release of neurotransmitters and endorphins. These chemicals help reduce the perception of pain and improve the body’s ability to manage inflammation. By increasing blood flow to the affected area, acupuncture facilitates the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the inflamed bursae, which helps reduce swelling and speed up the healing process.

Qi, Blood, and Balance

Moreover, acupuncture works to restore balance within the body’s energy systems. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), bursitis is often seen as a result of Qi stagnation or dampness in the body. Acupuncture treatments aim to disperse this stagnation, allowing the energy to flow freely once again, which in turn reduces inflammation and pain. Regular acupuncture sessions can help to prevent the recurrence of bursitis by maintaining the smooth flow of Qi and ensuring that the body remains in a balanced state.

Additionally, acupuncture has a calming effect on the nervous system, which can reduce the stress and tension that often accompany chronic pain conditions. This relaxation response further aids in the reduction of inflammation and pain, contributing to a holistic approach to healing. As a result, many patients experience long-lasting relief from bursitis symptoms after undergoing acupuncture treatment, often without the need for invasive procedures or medications.

Acupuncture Resolves Bursitis

Hip, shoulder, and elbow bursitis are the three most common types of bursitis we treat. Unfortunately, patients often don’t even realize the actual source of their pain. For example, health practitioners often misdiagnose hip bursitis as arthritis in the hip or sciatica.

Furthermore, patients often have unresolved or difficult-to-treat joint pain because treatment did not correctly address their bursitis. People often have a combination of arthritis AND bursitis of the hip, tennis elbow AND bursitis of the elbow, rotator cuff injury AND bursitis of the shoulder. Your acupuncture treatment will resolve ALL joint issues at the same time.

What To Expect

All needles are sterile, single-use, and hair-thin. You will hardly feel them. Furthermore, treatments are relaxing. Many of our patients fall asleep during their sessions. Afterward, you will feel refreshed and rejuvenated. While you rest, the treatment is powerfully draining inflammation from the bursae.
