What Is Interstitial Cystitis?
Interstitial cystitis involves “damp heat in the bladder and urethra.” Symptoms include a burning sensation with urination, low abdomen pain, urinary urgency, frequency, and feeling that urination is incomplete. Interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition that can be very painful. The good news is that acupuncture resolves most of its symptoms.
Acupuncture Relieves Interstitial Cystitis
The Chinese medicine strategy for treating interstitial cystitis is to clear damp heat from the bladder. Imagine that excess dampness and heat have accumulated in the bladder due to an imbalance in the body.
This damp heat has caused the bladder to malfunction, triggering the symptoms of IC (frequent, urgent, painful, burning urination). Acupuncture does two things to resolve this condition. First, it clears the damp heat from the bladder. Specific acupuncture points on the body reduce heat, dampness, and inflammation.
Secondly, since we seek long-term relief from symptoms, we also need to address the root cause of the problem – the body is generating excess dampness and heat, which in turn, is overacting on the bladder.
To resolve this, we need to correct the underlying internal imbalances. Acupuncture does this as well. When the organs are correctly balanced, they will not generate damp heat, freeing the body from inflammation. As a result, the Raleigh Acupuncture interstitial cystitis treatment delivers long-lasting relief.
Recent Interstitial Cystitis Case
A 45-year-old woman came to our clinic having been diagnosed with IC two years previous. She described feeling like she was having a UTI (urinary tract infection), with urgency and burning every time she went to the bathroom.
Our examination confirmed that she had damp heat in the lower jiao (low abdomen). We treated her with acupuncture and prescribed an appropriate Chinese herbal medicine formula. Within four weeks, treating her once a week, her condition improved 50 percent. After eight additional treatments, she was 95 percent better.
What To Expect
When you come for acupuncture to treat IC, our first goal is to relieve your symptoms. Our second goal is to correct the internal imbalances responsible for the symptoms.
In addition, many of our patients with IC take medications that are not providing relief. Plus, they often have adverse side effects. So another goal of acupuncture is to help you ween off unnecessary or harmful Western medications.

What our Clients are Saying
I highly recommend Raleigh Acupuncture. I was getting urinary tract infections every three months since my son was born and it was driving me crazy. After six treatments I was cured and no longer got them. I was treated so well and am very happy.
Went to Raleigh Acupuncture for frequent UTIs. They took care of the problem and I don’t get them anymore. Thank you!
I have suffered from IC for over 10 years, with terrible cramping and burning urination, having to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes. I tried acupuncture out of desperation because I wasn’t getting relief anywhere else. It worked incredibly and took away most of my IC symptoms. Why didn’t I know about this sooner. Raleigh Acupuncture is a really good practice. They have kept me healthy for over three years now. I highly recommend them for treating IC.
