What Is Lupus
Lupus (a.k.a. systemic lupus erythematosus) is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, causing inflammation. Symptoms can be mild to severe and include chest pain, hair loss, swollen lymph nodes, painful joints, fatigue, and a red rash on the cheeks. There are alternating periods of illness (flares) and times of few symptoms (remission). The cause of lupus is poorly understood, and there are few effective treatments.
Acupuncture Relieves Lupus Symptoms
The Raleigh Acupuncture lupus treatment reduces inflammation in the body, which eases Lupus symptoms. Chinese medicine restores balance to the body harmonizing organ function. Inflammation is considered excess heat – therefore, acupuncture reduces inflammation by reducing heat at the organ level.
For example, the acupuncture points Xiyan and LI11 drain inflammation and swelling from the knees. Applying these points over a series of treatments will heal the knees and significantly reduce pain. Likewise, the acupoint ST36 strengthens the digestive system. Lupus patients struggling with fatigue have improved energy after being treated with this point.
When you come for treatment, we ask several questions about your symptoms, pain, energy levels, sleep, bowels, and digestive function. We also look at your tongue and feel your pulse. This information creates a picture of your internal organ performance, individually and in conjunction with each other.
We then create a treatment plan that includes points to correct the imbalances, strengthen weak organs, and harmonize how they work together. Your acupuncture treatments work internally at the organ level and externally to reduce pain in the joints and muscles.
What To Expect
All needles are sterile, single-use, and hair-thin. The treatments are relaxing – many of our patients fall asleep during their sessions. While you rest, the acupuncture attunes your body from the inside out. The result is improved quality of life and fewer adverse symptoms from lupus.
Since we address root imbalances, results from the Raleigh Acupuncture lupus treatment are long-lasting. For example, our lupus patients have increased energy, less pain, and fewer flares. As a result, they can lead more productive lives while managing their condition.
Recent Lupus Acupuncture Case
A 47-year-old woman came to our clinic having been diagnosed with lupus two years earlier by her primary care physician. She complained of having painful joints, fatigue, difficulty staying asleep, night sweats, swollen lymph nodes, and a persistent red rash on her face. Her symptoms would worsen for a month or two and then recede, only to return.
After an intake exam, including feeling her pulse and assessing her tongue, we determined her Chinese medicine pattern diagnosis to be kidney yin deficiency with empty heat & Spleen qi deficiency. We created a treatment plan to address these root imbalances and began treatment. After four sessions, spaced one week apart, she reported the resolution of the flare she had been having. In addition, her night sweats had significantly reduced, energy and sleep quality improved, and pain diminished.
She continued treatment, now coming every other week, for another eight sessions, during which she did not experience any flares at all. This was the most extended amount of time between flares since the onset of her illness. At this point, she returned for maintenance treatments once a month. A few months later, she began having a flare. However, after two consecutive treatments, it resolved. She’s been coming for monthly sessions ever since, with continued success managing her health.
