Understanding Urinary Tract Infections
Wikipedia describes UTIs the following way:
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is caused by bacteria in part of the urinary tract. In the lower urinary tract, it is simple cystitis (a bladder infection). In the upper urinary tract, it is a kidney infection. Symptoms from a lower urinary tract infection include painful peeing and frequent peeing or wanting to pee (or both). Symptoms of a kidney infection include fever and side and back pain. The symptoms are not always so clear in older adults and young children. The main cause for both types is the bacteria Escherichia coli. In rare cases, the cause may be other bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
Western Medicine UTI Treatment Falls Short
The primary Western medical treatment for UTIs involves prescribing oral antibiotics. Antibiotics try to heal infections by killing off the bacterial infection in the bladder. But there are two problems with this approach. First, it’s literally “overkill,” taking out both the harmful and good bacteria, damaging the digestive system. Second, overuse has generated antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains that don’t respond to treatment. As a result, people often have to take multiple rounds of antibiotics and still do not get better.
Acupuncture Relieves Urinary Tract Infections
From a Chinese medicine perspective, a build-up of damp-heat in the bladder triggers urinary tract infections. Think of dampness like edema or swelling in areas where they don’t belong. When you add heat to dampness, you get the building blocks of disease, what modern medicine calls infection.
The damp-heat accumulation in the bladder causes burning, low abdomen pain, urinary urgency, frequency, and a feeling that urination is incomplete. The Raleigh Acupuncture urinary tract infection treatment resolves these symptoms quickly and effectively, healing the infection without antibiotics. How is this possible?
How Acupuncture Works
Our treatment resolves UTIs with acupuncture and herbs by clearing damp-heat from the bladder. Chinese herbs work in conjunction with acupuncture to get faster results.
Damp-heat is essentially inflammation that causes the bladder to malfunction, triggering painful urination, urgency, burning, and frequency. Specific acupuncture points transform dampness and clear excess heat from the body by promoting urination. The body rids itself of the infection using these natural mechanisms.
In addition, there is a preventative aspect to our treatment. First, we figure out why the body is generating so much damp-heat in the first place. Then, to resolve this problem, we balance the organs.
For example, working too hard (taxing the body) can lead to kidney yin deficiency, generating excess heat that can lead to bladder infections. Acupuncture can nourish kidney yin and clear heat.
What To Expect
Treating UTIs with acupuncture resolves infections faster and better than traditional medicine. In cases where multiple rounds of antibiotics have failed to stop the disease, acupuncture is critical to restoring health.
The needles are sterile, single-use, and hair-thin. And the treatments are relaxing – many of our patients fall asleep during their sessions. Afterward, you will feel refreshed and rejuvenated.
Recent Urinary Tract Infection Case
A 50-year-old woman came to our clinic struggling with a persistent UTI that would not go away despite taking three rounds of antibiotics. She had burning pain with urination, urgency, and frequency. Her tongue was red and dry, and her pulse was thin and rapid, all signs of excess internal heat.
Our treatment principle was to clear damp-heat from her bladder and nourish kidney yin. Her treatment included the following acupoints: CV3, CV4, LI11, KD2, KD6, ST29, and ST36. We also prescribed a Chinese herbal formula to assist in clearing damp-heat.
After the first two treatments, her condition improved by 40 percent. Following her fourth session, she was 80 percent better. A final treatment resolved her infection – urination was back to normal, with no pain or urgency. Meanwhile, the kidney-nourishing points made it less likely for her to get a UTI in the future – prevention is the best medicine.

What our Clients are Saying
I highly recommend Raleigh Acupuncture. I was getting urinary tract infections every three months since my son was born and it was driving me crazy. After six treatments I was cured and no longer got them. I was treated so well and am very happy.
Went to Raleigh Acupuncture for frequent UTIs. They took care of the problem and I don’t get them anymore. Thank you!
I have suffered from IC for over 10 years, with terrible cramping and burning urination, having to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes. I tried acupuncture out of desperation because I wasn’t getting relief anywhere else. It worked incredibly and took away most of my IC symptoms. Why didn’t I know about this sooner. Raleigh Acupuncture is a really good practice. They have kept me healthy for over three years now. I highly recommend them for treating IC.
