Shoulder Pain Solution

Watch this short video to learn how acupuncture treats shoulder pain.

The Problem With Shoulders

Maybe you hurt your shoulder playing sports. The doc gave you a cortisone shot or two, but the pain came back. Now you just live with it. Or you may have a tear or injury to the rotator cuff muscles. There are four muscles that make up the rotator cuff. They keep your shoulder joint stable. If there is trouble with one of these muscles, it throws off the balance of the other three.

The shoulder is a complex mechanical system. It has the most directional movement of any joint in the body. That makes it vulnerable. Unlike the knee, which can bear tremendous weight, the shoulder is much less strong. As such, the shoulder joint and accompanying muscles are more prone to injury. Lift something too heavy, in the wrong way, or at the wrong time, and injury can occur. And not just to the muscles. Tendons and ligaments are also prone to injury.

How It Work

The shoulder, from a Chinese medicine perspective, is a multi dimensional structure involving muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, channels, blood vessels and qi flow. They all need to be involved for deep healing to occur. For example, pain in the deltoid muscle (on the side of the shoulder) often requires releasing muscle tightness, increasing Qi circulation through the channels, and invigorating blood circulation in the muscle itself.

Often there is stagnant blood accumulated in the affected muscle, which needs to be dispersed before new blood can come in. Without proper Qi flow through the channels, the muscles cannot heal properly. And of course, muscles in spasm need to be released.

Tears and other injuries to tendons and ligaments can often heal with acupuncture. A more severe tear may require surgery, but it is always best to try acupuncture first. If acupuncture resolves your pain, you know the injury has been healed. If the pain persists, we will refer you to consult an orthopedic surgeon. 90% of the shoulder injuries we treat respond favorably to acupuncture. That’s why we call it the shoulder pain solution!

What To Expect

When you come for acupuncture we conduct an intake exam. You explain the history of your shoulder pain, when it developed, where it hurts, pain levels and other details. We conduct a physical examination of the shoulder and back. We then determine the cause of your shoulder pain, create a treatment plan, and give you a treatment. This all happens in your very first visit.

We use sterile, single-use, hair thin needles to treat your shoulder. You will hardly feel them. The treatments are very relaxing. Many of our patients fall asleep during their session. Afterwards you will feel rejuvenated. While you rest the healing is happening. We typically see good results resolving shoulder pain in 3-9 treatments.
