Plum Pit Qi Defined
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has recognized this condition for thousands of years. Ancient texts describe Plum Pit Qi feeling like there is a plum pit stuck in your throat. In fact, there is often nothing there at all. We call this “insubstantial phlegm.” It feels like phlegm, but there is nothing to see when you look down the throat with a scope. However, there IS something there. It is stuck energy.
The common cause for Plum Pit Qi is when an event has occurred in someone’s life that is “too hard to swallow.” For example, a woman in her fifties came to our clinic suffering from extreme throat pain when swallowing for the previous nine months. She had been to the doctor more than six times and had received every scan, scope, and test to rule out cancer, reflux, and any other possible Western medical condition. Feeling desperate, she came to our clinic.
Throat Pain When Swallowing
Her symptoms were classic Plum Pit Qi. A stuck feeling and throat pain when swallowing food or drink. The condition was causing her extreme distress. A workup revealed that besides this condition, she was otherwise healthy. We asked if anything happened nine months ago when the situation started. She could not recall anything that would have triggered her throat condition. We asked if anything “emotional” had occurred around that time. She immediately said, “Well, my Mom died nine months ago.”
After sharing our condolences with her, we asked if she and her mother had been close. “Oh my, yes,” she replied. “We were best friends. We lived together our entire lives. Her passing was unbearable to me.” On looking back, she confirmed that her throat pain when swallowing started just at about the same time as her mother’s passing.
