A 45 year old man came to our office complaining of chronic calf pain and cramping. He had been active all of his life, but the past 2 years had been unable to play tennis due to this pain. Physical therapy, dry needling and cortisone injections had not helped. This calf pain acupuncture case study describes how we were able to resolve this pain for good.
The Problem
Our patient had been an athlete in college and remained active since then. He was an avid tennis player, enjoyed running and going to the gym. His legs had always been tight, especially his calves and hamstrings. But over the last 2 years this tightness had turned into significant pain.
Calf Pain Acupuncture Case Study
Our treatment principle was to restore our patient’s calf muscle function to normal and resolve pain and tightness. Acupuncture works wonders rejuvenating damaged muscle. Releasing the muscle was the first step. Needles are very effective for this. But releasing the muscle is not enough.
We also increased qi and blood circulation to the leg. Qi is energy that flows through the body. Healthy muscles and organs require strong Qi circulation. Our patient’s calf muscles were not receiving proper Qi supply. This means they were not getting the proper blood circulation as well. By selecting specific acupuncture points on his leg, these channels were open.
Some of the points used in this calf pain acupuncture case study included BL36, BL37, BL40, BL57, BL58 and BL60. These are local points on the back of the leg. Other points were used to boost Qi and blood circulation in the body (BL17, BL18). We used electroacupuncture to enhance the effect of the treatment. Adding electric stimulation to the needles makes the treatment more powerful, and was a good fit for this patient.
Results
After the first 3 treatments our patient saw a 50% decrease in pain and tightness. By the end of 7 treatments he was cured. No pain, some tightness that he was able to stretch out. He was able to start playing tennis again.
