A 57-year-old taxi driver came to our clinic complaining of postconcussion syndrome interfering with his job and quality of life. Persistent headaches, dizziness, and blurred vision every day made it impossible for him to drive, and the stress caused insomnia and depression. This concussion acupuncture case describes how acupuncture resolved his symptoms and got him back on the road in just six treatments.
What Is Post Concussion Syndrome?
Postconcussion syndrome (PCS) is a typical result of traumatic brain injury (TBI) with symptoms that include headache, dizziness, anxiety, depression, and poor concentration, and memory loss. The term “postconcussion syndrome” was first used in 1934 and today is often replaced with the term “post-TBI syndrome,” as it often occurs after moderate and severe TBI. Mild TBI can occur after an impact to the head, or the brain undergoes an acceleration/deceleration without direct trauma to the head.
Concussion Acupuncture Case
In this concussion acupuncture case, our patient was in a motor vehicle accident two months earlier where he hit his head without losing consciousness. The symptoms of headache, dizziness, and blurred vision had continued ever since the accident. His doctor instructed him to stay home and rest, but the pressure of not working was causing even more stress and frustration.
Upon arrival at his first visit, we conducted an intake exam, which helped us identify his underlying organ imbalances. The traumatic event and concussion created a pattern of Liver qi and blood stagnation, along with Heart and Spleen blood deficiency.
Acupuncture Heals Traumatic Brain Injury
Most important for our patient was to increase his qi and blood circulation. Of course, you are familiar with blood circulation – the free flow of blood through the vessels to nourish the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and organs in the body, including the brain. However, in Chinese medicine, qi circulation is even more critical, as qi energy is the force that builds and circulates the blood.
In our patient’s first treatment, we used the following acupoints: Si shen cong, GV20, Li4, LV3, ST36, SP6, SP10, GB14, and Yintang. He felt relaxed during the treatment and, more importantly, felt tremendous relief afterward. Subsequent treatments used a variety of acupoints, some the same, some different, based on his needs during the healing process.
After four treatments (once a week), his headaches were 70 percent reduced, vision 60 percent improved, and dizziness 80 percent less. It took just two more treatments to have him more than 90 percent better overall. Finally, he could go back to work and function normally in his life.

What our Clients are Saying
Weekend warrior playing basketball, ended up with two concussions in two months. Not pretty. High stress job was not helping. Turned to acupuncture and got relief. Helped with mental focus, reduced my stress levels, and helped me get back on a normal sleep cycle. I’m not 100% yet, but feel I have a good chance of getting there. Will continue treatment. Am grateful to the folks at Raleigh Acupuncture. They really care about me getting better. I don’t wish this on anyone, but if you’re dealing with it, check them out. They’ll probably be able to help you.
Raleigh Acupuncture really helped me after my concussion. I was getting bad headaches every afternoon, could not concentrate, had blurred vision and terrible anxiety. The treatments were great. Relaxed me completely. Now I don’t get daily headaches, my thinking is a lot more clear, and I’m a whole lot less anxious. Thank you for your help!
