A 34 year old woman came to our office and said she had been diagnosed with a concussion two months earlier. Since the event she had developed daily headaches, visual problems, poor concentration, dizziness and severe anxiety. This concussion case study describes how acupuncture resolved her symptoms.
The Problem
Concussion occurs when there is trauma to the head and brain. Also called traumatic brain injury, concussion can be mild, moderate or severe. Even mild concussion can trigger a host of debilitating symptoms including the ones described above.
Neurologists often send the patient home with anti-anxiety medications and tell them to rest. But the symptoms can remain for months, and sometimes years. Acupuncture treats the root issues underlying the concussion, allowing for healing. This brings much quicker relief.
Concussion Case Study
Our patient in this concussion case study had no prior experience with these symptoms. The headaches would start after lunch every day, and continue until bedtime. Her visual problems included double vision, blurred vision and white flashes in her peripheral vision. She could not think straight, was forgetting things like shopping lists and car keys, and was challenged taking care of her 4 year old daughter.
She had constant dizziness, making it hard to walk. Finally, she felt extremely anxious all the time. She was not typically an anxious person. This was a new and upsetting emotion for her. It was difficult falling asleep at night because she could not quiet her mind of random, upsetting thoughts and fears.
Acupuncture Perspective On Concussion
Like many health conditions, concussion creates an imbalance in our bodies. In this case, the trauma to the head through a number of functions into disarray, leading to the symptoms described by our patient. Acupuncture has the unique ability to reset the body, correct imbalances and return a person to homeostasis. Once the imbalances are corrected, symptoms resolve and the person is healed.
Her Treatment
Chinese medicine diagnosis is made from the symptoms a patient reports plus examining their tongue and pulse. Our diagnosis of the patient in this concussion case study revealed that she had Heart Yin Deficiency, Liver Blood Deficiency and Liver Qi Stagnation. Her treatment was created to address these specific imbalances.
Acupuncture points included: LV3, LV8, SP6, PC6, BL15, BL18, BL20, Si Shen Cong, GV20, Yintang and Taiyang. Auricular (ear) acupuncture points included: Shen Men, Point Zero, Autonomic and Heart.
After four treatments (once a week) the patient’s symptoms were 50% resolved. This was a huge relief, as she knew without a doubt that her condition was improving. So many of our new acupuncture patients come in for treatment out of desperation, not knowing if the treatment will help or not. Happily, over 90% of them end up experiencing relief.
Six more treatments (continuing weekly) ended up resolving her remaining symptoms. At this point she was completely better. Six months later she reported no recurrence of symptoms.

What our Clients are Saying
Weekend warrior playing basketball, ended up with two concussions in two months. Not pretty. High stress job was not helping. Turned to acupuncture and got relief. Helped with mental focus, reduced my stress levels, and helped me get back on a normal sleep cycle. I’m not 100% yet, but feel I have a good chance of getting there. Will continue treatment. Am grateful to the folks at Raleigh Acupuncture. They really care about me getting better. I don’t wish this on anyone, but if you’re dealing with it, check them out. They’ll probably be able to help you.
Raleigh Acupuncture really helped me after my concussion. I was getting bad headaches every afternoon, could not concentrate, had blurred vision and terrible anxiety. The treatments were great. Relaxed me completely. Now I don’t get daily headaches, my thinking is a lot more clear, and I’m a whole lot less anxious. Thank you for your help!
