A 28-year-old woman came to our clinic complaining of debilitating fatigue. In addition, she had chronic stomach pain, bloating, nausea, and constipation. Her stress was high due to constantly feeling so poorly, and she had difficulty falling asleep. This fatigue acupuncture case study discusses her Chinese medicine diagnosis and treatment plan, which led to increased energy and better overall health.
Understanding Fatigue
Fatigue, from a Chinese medicine perspective, always involves digestive problems. If your stomach is weak, then it cannot properly digest the food you eat and will not be able to transform the food into energy. So most fatigue treatments involve strengthening the digestive system.
Our patient had classic symptoms associated with poor digestion – stomach pain, bloating, nausea, and bowel irregularity. However, we told her during the intake exam that she would not only have more energy after acupuncture, but her digestive problems would also significantly improve.
Poor sleep is also common among people struggling with fatigue. First, difficulty falling asleep can lead to a lack of sleep, directly tying into feeling tired during the day. Second, it is common for people with weak digestion to have difficulty sleeping.
Weak digestion leads to both qi deficiency (lack of energy) and blood deficiency (insufficient blood). If your stomach is not digesting properly, it cannot generate sufficient blood. And blood deficiency is the primary reason people have difficulty falling asleep.
Fatigue Acupuncture Case Study
Our patient’s tongue was pale, swollen, with scalloped edges, and her pulse was thin and wiry. This information, along with her other symptoms, confirmed that her Chinese medicine diagnosis was Spleen Qi & Blood deficiency, with Liver Qi Stagnation. Her treatment plan included the following acupoints: ST36, SP3, CV12, CV6, ST25, PC6, and LV3.
We treated her once a week. After the first two treatments, she reported feeling about 20 percent more energy. She also experienced less bloating pain and nausea. However, her bowel function was the same, tending toward constipation.
After her fourth treatment, our patient was feeling 40 percent more energy. She was able to get to the gym and do a small workout, something that had eluded her for months. We warned her to take it slow – she didn’t want to push too hard and overdo it. Slow and steady is the game in recovery from fatigue.
Restoring Balance – Restoring Health
This fatigue acupuncture case study demonstrates a classic example of how restoring balance to the body’s organs leads to improved health and quality of life. Following the eighth treatment, our patient felt like her old self again. Her energy was 80 percent restored, she had no stomach and bloating pain, no nausea, and her bowel function was significantly improved.
In addition, she was sleeping better than she had in years, and her stress levels were nothing compared to before she started acupuncture. Furthermore, she was a regular at the gym again and, with each passing week, felt stronger with better stamina. Moreover, she had started attending a boot camp class, which seemed impossible just a few months earlier.
The Key To Healing
The key to our patient’s healing and overcoming fatigue was addressing her weak digestive system (Spleen Qi deficiency). As her stomach healed, her body converted the food she ate into energy, which gave her the resources she needed to engage fully in life again.
Secondarily, the treatments reduced her stress by smoothing her Liver Qi. We could not take her stress away, but promoting Qi circulation prevents stress from lodging in her body. In her case, the stress in the body overacted on her stomach, damaging her digestive system: less stress, less damage, more energy.

Focus Keyphrase: Fatigue Acupuncture Case Study

A 2015 autoimmune acupuncture research study concluded that patients diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome found increased health and significant relief of symptoms. The study, published in the Guangxi Medical Journal, found acupuncture effectively relieved fatigue, depression, and other symptoms associated with CFS.
Chronic Fatigue & Autoimmune Disease
Chronic fatigue syndrome is one of the most widespread autoimmune diseases, characterized by severe fatigue that does not improve with rest. Additional symptoms include memory loss, foggy brain, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, musculoskeletal pain, and headaches. The cause of chronic fatigue is poorly understood and may result from viral infections, stress, and other factors. This autoimmune acupuncture research study reveals that a particular type of acupuncture reduces symptoms and has an impressive recovery rate for chronic fatigue patients.
Conventional Versus Qihuan Acupuncture
The total effective and recovery rates were significant in both groups. However, Qihuan acupuncture produced a higher percentage of positive patient outcomes as part of the total effective rate. Conventional acupuncture produced an 81 percent total effective rate, while Qihuan acupuncture produced a 96 percent total effective rate.
Of forty-eight patients receiving Qihuan acupuncture, sixteen patients had a complete recovery. Researchers defined total recovery as a complete resolution of all symptoms, where patients could return to normal social and work life. In the group of forty-seven patients receiving conventional acupuncture, ten experienced total recovery.
What Is Qihuan Acupuncture?
Qihuan acupuncture, like conventional acupuncture, integrates several Chinese medicine principles. Qihuan acupuncture benefits the internal organs (referred to as Zang-Fu in Chinese medicine). In addition, Qihuan acupuncture benefits qi, alleviates depression, strengthens liver function, promotes blood circulation, and relieves heat and toxicity.
According to Chinese medicine principles, chronic fatigue syndrome and most other autoimmune diseases negatively impact the internal organs, including the spleen/stomach, liver, and kidneys. As a result, this autoimmune acupuncture research study concluded that Qihuan acupuncture was well-suited for treating chronic fatigue and other autoimmune conditions.
Qihuan Acupuncture Treatment
Qihuan acupuncture utilizes eight acupuncture needles in a half-inch radius around the navel inserted at a 45-degree angle forming a complete circle. You can visualize the acupoint locations at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock to the belly button (acupoint CV8) plus the areas halfway between each clock designation for a total of eight directions. The maximum needle depth was 0.8 inches, and the needle retention time was thirty minutes for each acupuncture treatment.
Patients in the autoimmune acupuncture research study received treatment twice a week for a total of ten acupuncture treatments, followed by a second round of ten treatments.
Conventional Acupuncture Treatment
The conventional acupuncture group received the following acupoints:
Pishuu, BL20
Ganshu, BL18
Shenshu, BL23
Shanzhong, CV17
Zusanli, ST36
Guanyuan, CV4
Baihui, DU20
Practitioners utilized additional acupuncture points as needed, based on differential diagnostics. For example, patients with spleen qi deficiency also received Taibai (SP3) and Sanyinjiao (SP6). Those struggling with insomnia received acupoints Shenmen (HT7) and Zhaohai (KD6). Treatment for patients with memory impairment included Yintang and Shuigou (DU26). And patients who had liver qi stagnation received Taichong (LV3) and Neiguan (PC6).
Autoimmune Acupuncture Research Conclusions
Qihuan acupuncture and conventional acupuncture achieved significant total effective rates. Qihuan acupuncture achieved optimal results with a 96 percent total effective rate. Impressively, Qihuan acupuncture achieved superior patient outcomes for the total recovery rate. As a result, the researchers recommended Qihuan acupuncture for patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.
Next Steps
Try acupuncture if you struggle with chronic fatigue syndrome or another autoimmune condition involving fatigue, muscle, and joint pain, headaches, anxiety, or depression. Acupuncture is safe, natural, and provides long-term relief for autoimmune conditions. A 61 year old woman came to our office complaining of severe stomach pain. She also had urgent, frequent, loose bowel movements each morning as well as bloating. She also had very low energy and depression. This IBS acupuncture case study describes how acupuncture resolved her IBS. The treatments also boosted her energy and relieved her depression.

IBS – The Problem
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal condition. Symptoms include abdominal pain and hypersensitivity causing discomfort , gas, bloating, constipation or diarrhea. In the United States, 10 to 15 percent of the adult population suffers from IBS symptoms. It is one of the most common disorders seen by primary care physicians.
Acupuncture – The Solution for IBS
Acupuncture has been resolving IBS for thousands of years. Modern scientific research confirms this fact. The World Journal of Gastroenterology recently published a study concluding that acupuncture is an effective treatment for IBS*.
Acupuncture treats IBS by addressing the root issues responsible for the condition. Evaluations of each patient determine the unique pattern imbalance responsible for their condition. Acupuncture is then used to restore balance to the body. Treatments reduce adverse symptoms, and often resolve them.
Acupuncture recognizes that conditions like IBS may have different root causes. Each patient presents with their own unique symptoms. And acupuncture is able to provide customized, specific treatments to address their needs. The results of treating at the root level is that patients get long term relief.
IBS Acupuncture Case Study
Our patient in this IBS acupuncture case study had classic symptoms of diarrhea type IBS. Her digestive issues were responsible for her fatigue. Energy comes from the food we eat. Her impaired stomach function was resulting in bowel issues, stomach pain and bloating. A stomach out-of-balance cannot transform food into energy.
Also, there was a link between her depression and the IBS. Her specific pattern imbalance was Liver Overacting on Spleen. This is a very common pattern seen in the United States. Depression is one of the common symptoms associated with this pattern.
Many times patients come to acupuncture with a modern medicine diagnosis (like IBS). But they often are struggling with other symptoms at the same time. Doctors may have sent their patients to specialists to address the other symptoms.
Acupuncture often sees these symptoms as related. Proper treatment of the root cause can often resolve them. In this case, treating the root issue resolved all our patient’s symptoms.
Treatment Plan
Our patient’s Chinese medicine diagnosis dictated her treatment plan. Specific acupuncture points strengthened her digestive and bowel function. Other points improved Qi circulation through her body.
Qi circulates through the body like blood. It travels through channels while blood travels through vessels. The body requires good qi and blood circulation to nourish the organs so they can function.
Results
After four treatments the patient was feeling much better. Her bowels were 40% improved, energy was 30% better and her mood was also 30% better. Since the treatments were helping she decided to continue treatment. After seven treatments all symptoms were 70% improved. At the end of a course of treatment (12 sessions) she was more than 95% better in all areas. Learn more about how acupuncture resolves stomach pain.

What To Expect
This IBS acupuncture case study is a typical result at Raleigh Acupuncture. IBS is straight forward to treat and provides long lasting results. That’s because the pattern imbalances that cause IBS respond well to acupuncture. People diagnosed with IBS should try acupuncture to see if it will benefit them.

A 2014 fatigue acupuncture research study concluded that acupuncture was effective for the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The total effective rate of acupuncture was 80.0%.

A high complete recovery rate was achieved with acupuncture as a standalone therapy for CFS patients in 20 office visits. As a result the researchers conclude, “Electroacupuncture can produce a remarkable efficacy in treating CFS.”
Chronic Fatigue
CFS presents as extreme fatigue often without a biochemical or organic cause. It may also involve musculoskeletal pain, sleep disorders, headaches, impaired cognition and memory, swollen or tender lymph nodes, chronic sore throat, persistent low grade fever, anxiety and depression.
Researchers acknowledge that the etiology is not known. It may be due to viral infections, immune system disorders and/or hormonal imbalances. Chronic fatigue syndrome is most common with women in the 40s and 50s. Patients that are overweight or less active are more likely to develop the condition. Stress is most likely an aggravating and/or exacerbating factor.
Location of Study
This fatigue acupuncture research was conducted at Taihe Hospital in affiliation with the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Hubei University of Chinese Medicine. Criteria for inclusion in the study followed standard Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.
Selection of Patients
Patients had at least 6 months of unexplained persistent or recurrent extreme fatigue that was debilitating and could not be relieved by rest. Activities of daily living must have shown a decrease by at least 50%.
Each patient in the fatigue acupuncture research study had at least 4 of the following symptoms: persistent post-exertion fatigue, sleep problems, musculoskeletal pain, sore throat, brain fog or memory loss, joint pain not accompanied by redness or swelling, lymph node swelling in the armpit or neck, or headaches.
Acupuncture Treatment
Sterile, stainless steel, single-use needles were inserted into specific points. An achy sensation (called deqi) was obtained on the points. The needles were retained for 20 minutes. Next, between 4-6 acupuncture points were given electroacupuncture stimulation.
Acupuncture points used in the study included: GV20 (Baihui), CV4 (Guanyuan), CV6 (Qihai), BL25 (Xinshu), BL18 (Ganshu), BL13 (Feishu), BL20 (Pishu), BL23 (Shenshu), PC6 (Neiguan), HT7 (Shenmen), SP6 (Sanyinjiao), ST36 (Zusanli). Many of these acupuncture points are classically used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the strengthening of qi.
Results
For the purposes of this fatigue acupuncture research, a complete recovery was defined as a resolution of all major symptoms and complications. In addition, it required that a patient return to both a normal social life and a normal work life and schedule. 80% of the patients obtained a complete recovery. Acupuncture proved extremely effective for delivering positive patient outcomes.

A 44 year old woman came to our office complaining of exhaustion, feeling overwhelmed and difficulty concentrating. Her lab tests were normal and her doctors could not find anything wrong. This exhaustion case study describes how acupuncture was able to help her regain energy and purpose in life.

Her full list of symptoms included fatigue, overwhelm, foggy thinking and poor concentration, anxiety, depression, trouble sleeping, irregular menstrual cycle, low motivation, food cravings and weight gain. Symptoms started fairly abruptly six months earlier with no explanation. It was difficult taking care of her two sons and it was affecting her work. She had been to a number of different doctors who were not able to find anything wrong with her.
Treatment Plan
In this exhaustion acupuncture case study, we first had to figure out what was causing her fatigue. On her first visit we completed an intake, which involved asking her questions about her daily functions. Topics included sleep patterns, bowel function, body temperature, pain, emotions, breathing, heart rate and digestion.
We also felt her pulse and looked at her tongue. These are important in making a sound Chinese medicine diagnosis. Based on this information we concluded that she was suffering from deficiency of Spleen Qi, Heart Blood and Kidney Yin.
Armed with this diagnosis, we treated her with acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Acupuncture points included: ST36, SP6, HT7, PC6, KD3, KD6, BL15, BL18, BL20, BL23, GV20 and Yintang. Ear points included ShenMen and Point Zero.
Bouncing Back
After her initial four treatments our patient felt much better. Her energy levels were up 50%. Not surprisingly, her mood was also better. She had more motivation. And her concentration also saw improvement.
After another six treatments she was 90% better. She was feeling like her old self again. She was more energetic, less overwhelmed and able to think much more clearly It felt like the fog had lifted. As she regained functionality, her anxiety and depression eased.
So many times anxiety and depression come as a result of either pain or some other physical disability. Treating the root issue (exhaustion) is often the best way to resolve emotional conditions like stress, anxiety and depression.

As she regained her strength, our patient was able to start exercising again. This allowed her to lose some weight and it also reduced her food cravings. All in all, she was on the road to recovery, and feeling more confident.

Exhaustion Acupuncture Case Study
This exhaustion acupuncture case study provides a good overview for how acupuncture works to treat the root problem. Treating symptoms alone gives temporary relief. Addressing root issues provides long lasting healing.
New research finds acupuncture lowers fatigue and boosts athletic endurance. We don’t usually site lab research, but this study was so interesting we wanted to post it. Scientists studied the impact of three acupuncture points on the swimming ability and liver function of laboratory rats.

The study was performed in a highly controlled investigation. Results showed that the control group fatigued much sooner than the acupuncture group. The acupuncture group also displayed improved liver mitochondrial-respiratory function with significant lower oxygen consumption rates than the control groups.
Acupuncture Lowers Fatigue
The researchers compared two acupuncture point treatments. Group 1 received electroacupuncture at the points CV4 (Guanyuan) and ST36 (Zusanli) plus manual acupuncture stimulation at GV20 (Baihui). Group 2 received electroacupuncture at CV3 (Zhongji) and SP9 (Yinlinquan) and manual acupuncture stimulation at Yintang (EX-HN3).
These points are close to each other in location, but have different effects on the body. Group 1 showed much higher scores than group 2, demonstrating that the CV4, ST36, GV20 acupuncture point prescription had significantly better anti-fatigue benefits.
Results and Explanation
The treatment using CV4, ST36 and GV20 strengthened the congenital foundation (which is inherited in DNA at birth) and the acquired constitution (what you get from the food you eat and the air you breathe). In Chinese medicine terms, this is the ideal form of strengthening.
The researchers concluded, “Electroacupuncture of CV4 and ST36 plus manual acupuncture stimulation of GV20 can improve the anti-fatigue capability in aging rats with yang-deficiency, which may be related to its effects in reducing liver mitochondrial oxygen consumption and increasing liver mitochondrial RCR and ratio of P/O.” In other words, acupuncture lowers fatigue.
Another Powerful Acupuncture Point
Another study examined whether acupuncture had beneficial effects on body strength and endurance. Researchers from the International Society for Autonomic Neuroscience concluded that acupuncture impacts heart rate and increases the strength of cardiac autonomic function. The research demonstrated that particular acupuncture points helped prevent heart attack and arrhythmia.
This research looked at acupuncture points CV17 (Shanzhong) and CV16 (Zhongting). These points are both located on the sternum. Needling CV17 decreased the heart rate and increased the body’s ability to maintain control of the heart beat rate and rhythm through vagus nerve activity. CV16 did not show the same beneficial effects on the heart rate as CV17.
In addition, CV17 activated the autonomic nervous system to control heart rate by increasing vagal activity. This makes CV17 an important acupuncture point for patients recovering from heart attack.

Conclusions
This research investigating how acupuncture lowers fatigue is interesting in two ways. First, it supported the benefits of a specific acupuncture treatment (CV4, ST36, GV20) to reduce fatigue and boost energy. We use these points all the time at Raleigh Acupuncture. Our own clinical experience agrees with these findings.
Secondly, research identified CV17 as a powerful point for improving heart function. Again, this is our experience at Raleigh Acupuncture.

The Problem
Chemotherapy saves hundreds of thousands of lives each year. But it can be tough on the body. Common side effects include fatigue, bruising and bleeding, infection, anemia, nausea and vomiting, appetite changes, constipation and diarrhea, mouth, tongue, throat problems, numbness, tingling and pain, urinary issues, concentration, mood changes, and sexual function issues.
The Solution
The Raleigh Acupuncture chemo side effects treatment resolves these debilitating symptoms safely and naturally. However, to understand how it works, it is helpful to know how chemo causes them in the first place. Chemotherapy medications create disharmony in the body due to their toxicity. This disharmony manifests as the typical symptoms listed above.
Acupuncture restores balance in the body. And when it does, these symptoms naturally resolve. For example, chemo drugs cause nausea. That’s because they damage the stomach. Stomach energy (called Stomach Qi) should have a downward movement. Foods naturally descend from the stomach to the intestines. The damage caused by chemo reverses this natural flow and forces the stomach Qi to rise. We call this Rebellious Stomach Qi, and it manifests as nausea.
By harmonizing and strengthening the stomach, acupuncture restores its natural downward flow, resolving nausea in the process. Each of the symptoms listed above associated with chemotherapy has its particular development path. When you come for acupuncture, we identify the imbalances and create a comprehensive treatment plan to address them. The result will be that you feel much better.

What To Expect
Acupuncture is safe and relaxing, with no adverse side effects. All needles are sterile, single-use, hair-thin needles. As a result, many of our patients fall asleep during their sessions.

What our Clients are Saying
I developed severe abdominal pain following the stomach flu. Three rounds of antibiotics did not help. Neither did an elimination diet. Raleigh Acupuncture got rid of the pain in six treatments! Acupuncture is amazing. And so are they.
My acid reflux meds stopped working about three months ago and someone suggested acupuncture so I gave it a try. I couldn’t eat anything without having burning pain from my stomach up into my chest. What a relief from the acupuncture! They totally cured my reflux. I’ve been living with this, just managing it with medications, when all the while I could have cured it with this. Absolutely amazing! I love Raleigh Acupuncture!!
I have always had a nervous stomach. Some people get headaches, I get stomach aches. It’s always worse with stress and eases up on the weekends when I can relax. I did not think of getting treatment until I stumbled on an article saying how acupuncture was excellent for treating stomach pain. I went to Raleigh Acupuncture and described my condition. They explained why my stomach hurt. It totally made sense to me. It’s all about internal balance. So they went to work on me to get my stomach balanced. And I’m pleased to say that it worked. I no longer have a nervous stomach and stomach pain, even in stressful situations. I’ve made some changes to my diet, based on their recommendations, and took chinese herbs for a while, but don’t need to take them now. I’m convinced that I would have lived with stomach pain for the rest of my life had it not been for acupuncture.
About six months ago I starting getting debilitating fatigue, to the point where I could not exercise and had to drag myself through the day at work. The doctors said it must be stress, because there was nothing wrong with me. But when I went to Raleigh Acupuncture, they said that my digestion was weak. They said I was not getting proper energy from the food I was eating, so they treated my digestive system. I was amazed to see my energy increase after the treatments. Within 10 treatments I was back to my old self, exercising again and working through the day no problem. And as a side benefit, I started losing weight. They said this was related to my improved digestive function. Now my friends want to go because they see my energy back and see me losing weight!
I am a long term patient of Raleigh Acupuncture. Prior to being under their care, I was disabled with terrible fatigue and pain all over my body. I was unable to drive, could only walk less than a block, and had numerous symptoms that mystified doctors. After countless lab work, x-rays, and MRI’s, several doctors including my primary physician told me that there was nothing that could be done. According to them, it was either an illness that was undiagnosable or it was all in my head. When I came to Raleigh Acupuncture, it was a breath of fresh air. They took me very seriously and were not mystified by my condition. They assured me that my condition was treatable and manageable. They treat me with respect, dignity and care; something that I didn’t receive at my primary care doctor. Thanks to their treatments I am now living a normal life. They have restored my health and taught me how to manage my condition. My family and friends can’t believe how much improvement I have made. My son is grateful to have his mommy back! And I am eternally grateful to Raleigh Acupuncture! They truly have the gift of healing!
I still am forever in your debt for helping me through the Lymes recovery. My body pain and fatigue were overwhelming before getting acupuncture. I still tell everyone today that I am 100% positive that my recovery was a direct result of your expert care. Truly. I have very little residual effects from the disease that I can easily live with. So again, thank you not only for your amazing skills, but for the compassion and kindness that you showed me during that time.
