A 51 year old woman came to our acupuncture clinic nervous about her blood pressure. The last time she was at the doctors it was high, and her doctor told her that if she didn’t lower it he would have to give her blood pressure medication. This hypertension acupuncture case study describes how acupuncture was able to get her blood pressure lowered so she could avoid taking medication.
Hypertension – A Growing Problem
Hypertension is the medical name for high blood pressure. It is defined as blood pressure above 130/80, and is considered severe when the pressure rises above 180/120. Hypertension often leads to severe health issues like heart disease, stroke, and sometimes death.
Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of the vessels. As the heart pushes blood through the body, you want the pressure to be just right – not too high and not too low. It’s like the air pressure in your tires. Too high or too low can damage the tires. One out of three adult Americans have high blood pressure.
The standard way to treat hypertension is to take medications. This is what our patient’s doctor wanted to do. The most popular medication are ACE inhibitors. These medicines relax the blood vessels by blocking the action, not the formation, of angiotensin, a chemical in the body that narrows blood vessels. Angiotensin production involves the heart, kidneys and liver.
Acupuncture Reduces Blood Pressure Naturally
Acupuncture strengthens the heart, kidneys and liver, which results in lowering blood pressure naturally. Research suggests that while hypertension medicine blocks the action of angiotensin, acupuncture addresses the root issue, blocking the formation of it in the first place.
In addition, acupuncture balances the body’s key organs that support heart function, allowing it to work more efficiently. Thirdly, acupuncture reduces stress, improves metabolism and restores proper water balance to the body, all key factors for maintaining normal blood pressure.
Hypertension Acupuncture Case Study
When our patient in this hypertension acupuncture case study came for treatment, the first thing we did was assess her overall health. Acupuncture is all about restoring balance to the body. To do that, we need to identify the imbalances. We did this by asking a series of questions about her daily body functions (sleep, digestion, emotions, bowels) and then feeling her pulse and looking at her tongue.
Pulse diagnosis has been practiced for thousands of years by Chinese medicine practitioners. The pulse reveals valuable information about many aspects of a person’s health. Tongue diagnosis is also an important tool to assess health. The tongue is the flag to the stomach. It’s like looking at an internal organ of the body. Color, shape, coating and texture all reveal information about a person’s health.
The Importance Of Chinese Medicine Diagnosis
Our patient had a number of imbalances in her health. First, she was under a tremendous amount of stress. Her husband had to take a job out of state, leaving her living alone for weeks at a time. Second, she was struggling with her weight. Third, she has a family history of high blood pressure.
After examining the patient, we determined her Chinese medicine diagnosis to be Liver Qi stagnation, Spleen Qi deficiency and accumulated dampness. Her treatment consisted of acupuncture points designed to address these imbalances. The goal was to lower her blood pressure.
Her doctor’s appointment was coming up in four weeks. He would take her blood pressure again at that time. If it was still high he would start her on hypertension medications. She did not want that to happen. We treated her with acupuncture once a week for four weeks, specifically to reduce her blood pressure. We did this by correcting the imbalances described above. Acupuncture always treats at the root level when correcting a specific problem.
Acupuncture Brings Spectacular Results
After four treatments she returned to her doctor. Her blood pressure was normal! Since then she has come for acupuncture treatment once a month to maintain healthy blood pressure. Her stress levels are lower, and she has started losing weight. Life is still challenging, but she feels up for the fight.

What our Clients are Saying
My doctor was trying to get me to start hypertension medication because I was borderline for over a year. I didn’t want to because I knew I’d be on them forever. My wife did research and found Raleigh Acupuncture. They treated me and were able to lower my blood pressure to 135/85. My doctor says that if I maintain that level I don’t need to start the meds. I recommend Raleigh Acupuncture. They are professional, kind and know their stuff.
I was taking blood pressure medication but was unable to stabilize my blood pressure. Acupuncture reduced my stress and brought my blood pressure under control. Thank you Raleigh Acupuncture!!!
