A 78-year-old man came to our clinic complaining of low energy, poor motivation, and low libido. He was skeptical of acupuncture but desperate for help. After seven treatments, his energy and strength levels improved, he had better motivation, and his sex drive grew. This increased vitality acupuncture case study describes his transformation.
Aging and Vitality
As we age, our vitality naturally declines. If we are lucky and can avoid major diseases and injuries, it is possible to remain active and vibrant through our fifties and sixties. Most of us are not so lucky. In our thirties or forties, life happens to us in the form of accidents (sports-related, car accidents) or health conditions (autoimmune, anxiety, depression, diabetes, heart disease). These incidents, which cause pain and fatigue, directly impact our vibrancy, energy, motivation, and zest for life.
Even in the best of circumstances, where we can avoid these pitfalls, organ function declines naturally over time. Our bodies are like cars – highly complex machines with multiple interacting, interdependent parts. Over time these parts wear, misalign, or break down.
Acupuncture and the Aging Process
Acupuncture naturally slows the aging process by keeping our bodies running smoothly, maintaining healthy organ function, and promoting good qi and blood circulation. It helps us bounce back from injury, resolve or manage health conditions, and boost our immunity to fend off disease.
Early treatment is a critical component of staying healthy. It is common for people to “put up with” a pain or health condition, either because they don’t know what to do to treat it, or their doctor had no treatment for them. Acupuncture “restores balance”, and can be applied for every health situation that arises. It strengthens our bodies to maintain equilibrium and maintain good health.
Increased Vitality Acupuncture Case Study
In this increased vitality acupuncture case study, our 78-year-old patient was feeling worn down. Until recently, he had always gone to the gym, kept active, and kept a full social life. He was “popular with the ladies”, dating a lot, and prided himself on his youthful appearance.
But about six months ago, things changed. Our patient lost his edge, began feeling tired, with low motivation and low libido. His primary care physician found nothing wrong with his health and suggested he take antidepressant medication. Our patient turned this offer down. He had little interest in medications. He tried forcing himself to exercise, with no success. It seemed his body was “missing something”.
Chinese Medicine Diagnosis
Upon examination, we discovered that our patient had a clear imbalance in two areas. Symptoms of the first imbalance included low energy, poor appetite, loose stools, and tongue with scalloped edges. These symptoms pointed to Spleen Qi deficiency and occurred because our patient’s digestive function is weak. His lowered libido and lack of motivation (second imbalance) were caused by Liver Qi stagnation, which was confirmed by his irritability and wiry pulse.
Increased Vitality Treatment Plan
Treatment for Spleen deficiency included acupuncture points to boost his digestive process, enabling him to extract energy from the food he ate. These points included: ST36, SP3, CV12, ST21, BL20, and Li10. We addressed his Liver stagnation by including LV3, Li4, BL18, and Shen Men in the ear. Also, given his age, we added points to boost his Kidney function, which helps promote vibrancy in people older than 70.
Amazing Results
We treated him once a week for seven weeks. After the first three treatments, he started feeling more like his old self. Motivation started picking up, energy improved, and he felt like he was turning the corner. After completing seven treatments, he felt restored. He was going to the gym again, and had rediscovered his vibrancy for life.
Not surprisingly, his tongue and pulse no longer reflected the Spleen and Liver imbalances. His body, with a little help from acupuncture, had restored itself and was “rebalanced”. And he felt it.
Lasting Benefits
We suggested, and he agreed, to continue coming to acupuncture once a month for maintenance. That was over two years ago, and he’s still doing great. He is 80 now, dating, exercising, and feeling full of life.

What our Clients are Saying
I’m 88 years old and still ride my bike around Raleigh, take exercise classes, and swim. I’ve done acupuncture for years. I believe it helps me stay young. Raleigh Acupuncture is a good practice. They’re well trained and work hard at what they do. I’ve tried to get my bridge friends to try it, but they’re all chicken. Their loss.
Great practice! I get a tune-up every month and keeps me feeling younger (I’m 75). Wish Medicare covered, but it’s still worth it.
I’m 62 and have always been active. I ran marathons until two years ago, when I just didn’t have the stamina any longer. I know they say you have to adjust as you get older, but I was not ready to do that. So I tried acupuncture to see if it would help in this area. Not only did I increase energy, but my stamina increased and I felt stronger. I trained for and ran another marathon and felt like I did ten years ago. My time wasn’t faster, but my body handled the stress of the race much better. I recommend this practice for athletes as they get older.
